Short’s Goal and Stout Defense Leads Highlanders to Pivotal Win over Panthers

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program used Lilly Short's lone goal in the first half and an impressive defensive performance to earn a pivotal 1-0 victory over High Point Wednesday night.

KEY STATS
  • The goal by Short was her team-best eighth of the season and second of conference play. Short last scored against Gardner-Webb to open Big South play.
  • It was an offensive onslaught on both sides with 26 combined shots, 14 on goal.
  • Goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi ended the night with nine saves, tying a career high.
  • Nine of High Point's 14 shots came in the second half, but the Panthers drew no corners in the final 45 minutes.

PLAY BY PLAY
Needing a win late in conference play, the Highlanders welcomed the Panthers to Tom Lillard Field at Cupp Stadium Wednesday night. Coming into the match, High Point sat in first in the conference standings after winning two straight matches.

Intensity was on display early as both offenses worked towards multiple scoring opportunities. Jashyra Johnson, who had a big night with multiple strong shots, began the shooting with a shot in the opening minutes that went just high. After a pair of saves by Radvanyi, Radford's offense got its big strike.

From just past midfield, Helena Willson placed a perfect pass in the box for Short who came sprinting in. The Panthers defense had no answer, and Short struck a perfect shot to give Radford the 1-0 edge.

Radford would have another great scoring opportunity before the half closed. June Stevens made a great strike that the High Point keeper was able to punch out. Right there, though, was Eileen Albers waiting to strike. Albers got a strong kick off, but the ball just found the Panthers' keeper's foot to keep the lead from doubling.

In the second half both teams came out just as aggressive. Despite neither team drawing an offsides through the front 45, both teams combined for a trio of offsides calls to start the second half.

While the Panthers offense pushed for a handful of shots throughout the second half, Radford's defense stood strong dispelling multiple pushes to score. Radvanyi also kept the score sheet clean with four great saves in the final 45. When all was said and done, Radford held on for the impressive 1-0 victory.

NOTABLES
  • Radford has gone four straight matches without a loss to High Point, winning three of the last four with one tie dating back to 2021 to pull ahead 16-14-4 in the all-time series.
  • Radford's defense has only allowed one goal over the last 360 minutes.
  • Short's eight goals this season are more than her last two seasons combined.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I was proud of the way we organized ourselves and how hard we played defensively. We had enough chances to have a second goal, and I wish we would've, but they cleared three off the line. Overall, this is a fantastic win. There's a lot of parity in the Big South this year and it all comes down to the day. Every day we have to show up." – Ben Sohrabi.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Gardner-Webb used a strong 90 minute showing to take down Winthrop 2-0 at home.
  • Presbyterian sealed another shutout with a strong 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville.
  • USC Upstate scored three second half goals to come back and defeat Charleston Southern 3-2.

UP NEXT
