Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Two Late Goals Not Enough Against Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program scored a pair of second half goals Saturday night against Charleston Southern but fell short in a 3-2 final.

KEY STATS
  • Paige Olson's goal was her second of the season joining seven assists for a total of 11 points overall.
  • Ava Kertgate's goal was her third of the season, a new single season career high.
  • The Highlanders were held to just one corner kick on the night compared to the Buccaneers' six.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford was forced to play from behind early in the match due to an unfortunate hand ball inside their own box off a corner kick. The Buccaneers took advantage of that penalty kick opportunity to lead 1-0 ten minutes in.

Radford battled hard going into halftime but wasn't able to break through until coming back out from the lockeroom. After trailing for 50 minutes, it was Olson who would place a perfect strike through a crowded box to tie the match at one-all in the 64th minute.

Charleston Southern, however, didn't wait long for the response. In the 71st minute, the Buccaneers scored again and in the 75th minute an incredible shot rang in to make it a 3-1 deficit.

With time running out, Radford buckled down for a comeback attempt. Thanks to passes across the field from Hunter Rosenberg and June Stevens, Kertgate was set up perfectly to strike and pull the match closer at 3-2.

That's as close as the Highlanders would get, however, as the Buccaneers held on for the eventual 3-2 final.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"The scoring came too little too later tonight. We had some key errors, and the Buccaneers capitalized on them. We played well in spurts, but any time you give three goals in a Big South match you're not doing yourself any favors. We'll have to do a better job at keeping our goals against average down. A lot of credit to Charleston Southern, they came in here and really wanted it." – Ben Sohrabi.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • USC Upstate earned a strong 2-1 victory at home over Longwood.
  • Presbyterian got back into the win column with a 3-1 decision over Gardner-Webb.
