Defensive Effort Locks Down Spartans, Leads Highlanders to 1-0 Victory

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program got back into the win column in a big way Wednesday night defeating USC Upstate 1-0 thanks to an incredible defensive effort.

KEY STATS
  • Ashley Loundermon's goal was the deciding factor in the match, the third game-winner of her career.
  • Lexi Radvanyi was right in the middle of the shutout for the Highlanders with five crucial saves, including a pair in the closing minutes.
  • Just one offsides was called all night on either team, drawn by the Spartans.
  • Seven different Highlanders took the total of seven shots by Radford.

PLAY BY PLAY
In a rematch of the 2023 Big South Championship title game, Radford and USC Upstate continued to bring the energy into tonight's match-up. While USC Upstate maintained possession early, it was Radford who got the first shot off from Eileen Albers who had an open look but just missed high.

Radford's defense would hold strong on a pair of USC Upstate corner kicks, returning the favor with a pair of their own, before the lone goal of the night came in the 34th minute. Just by the corner flag, Caitlyn Nottingham tossed the ball back into play to get the opportunity started.

A USC Upstate defender deflected the thrown-in ball, but it found Albers who quickly turned a beautiful cross into the box. Loundermon, who had the deciding goal in last year's championship, came charging in and placed a perfect header past the outstretched goalie for the 1-0 lead.

USC Upstate would make a line change with eight substitutions after the goal, but Radford would hold strong over the final 10 minutes of the half to keep their 1-0 advantage. In the second half Radford looked to keep the offensive intensity while maintaining their defensive front.

Radford earned a corner right away to begin the second half. Outside of that, however, it was USC Upstate who held a majority of possession. The Spartans got off quality shots on goal in the 75th, 78th, 81st and 89th minutes, but Radvanyi was right there for each one making incredible saves to keep the lead intact.

USC Upstate's shot attempt in the 89th minute was a strong strike requiring Radvanyi to make her strongest move of the night. With the big save, it was all Radford needed to hold on and preserve the 1-0 victory.

NOTABLES
  • The shutout was the first of the season for Radvanyi and fifth in her career.
  • Radford's win over USC Upstate was their first over the Spartans at Cupp Stadium since 2020. The Highlanders' last two wins against the Spartans came in the Big South Tournament in Matthews, N.C.
  • With the assist, Albers now has 15 points on the season with six goals and three assists.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"Tonight, we played a different kind of game. I'm proud of how our girls adapted and trusted us in the game plan we had. What we pulled off tonight didn't come easy to them, but they responded. The main focus this time of year is to get points. Our biggest goal tonight was to get a shutout so I'm also happy to get the Big South win." – Ben Sohrabi.
