Women’s Basketball Falls on Road to Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program fell to Virginia on the road Wednesday night despite getting solid performances from Makayla Firebaugh and Anna Stromberg.

KEY STATS
  • Firebaugh found her shooting stride tonight setting a season-high 12 points on 56% shooting with 2 assists.
  • The freshman Stromberg broke out in a big way tonight setting career-bests for rebounds and points against a large, physical Cavaliers squad. Stromberg finished with eight points and six rebounds.
  • The Highlanders put forth a strong shooting effort in the third quarter going 6-11 from the field.
  • Virginia shot from three with haste in the meeting taking 30 attempts from deep.

PLAY BY PLAY
In the opening quarter the host Cavaliers immediately went up on a 6-0 run but it was Joi Williams who halted the run with a three-ball. An 11-0 run would extend Virginia's lead where it would remain before the game went final.

Firebaugh would add a pair of layups before the first quarter ended to get her night started while Stromberg also added some second chance points. Cate Carlson would add five straight points through the middle of the second quarter as the Highlanders tried to keep up with the Cavaliers fast pace.

Down 45-23 to start the second half, Radford got its best shooting quarter of the evening in the third, but turnovers kept any comeback attempt at bay. Stromberg came alive in the third sinking six points while pushing her rebound total to six in the game as well.

Virginia would hold their advantage through the end of the second half despite some shooting struggles over the final 10 minutes. Kirby Brown would add her first basket of the season before the game would eventually go final 83-41.
