Women’s Basketball Falls to #11 Duke in Season Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program fell to a tough #11 Duke squad Monday morning in the program's season opener.

KEY STATS
  • Cate Carlson eclipsed 10 points in her debut thanks in part to a pair of threes.
  • Radford's 24 first half points were their most against a top-25 opponent since the 2018-19 season.
  • Redshirt freshman Adelyn Traylor-Walker sunk seven points on 2 of 3 shooting.
  • Radford finished 13 of 18 from the free throw line, a 72% clip.

PLAY BY PLAY
Settling in against a Duke squad with high aspirations for the season, Radford got its first points of the season via a three from Carlson. Traylor-Walker followed with a pair of free throws for her first collegiate points as Radford clawed back to down just 5-11.

A 9-0 run pulled things back in Duke's full favor until Makayla Firebaugh broke the run with her first points as a Highlander. Looking for a spark down 26-9 after one quarter, Radford got it from Taylor Napper who caught fire for five points with a strong and-one opportunity. Radford would close out the final five minutes of the half with a 9-2 run to keep things within striking distance at 24-40.

A scoring drought in the second half would plague the Highlanders as the Blue Devils were able to fully pull away in the contest. Radford would get makes from Carlson and Traylor-Walker, but the final would settle at 89-36 in Duke's favor.
