Second Half Outburst Paces Highlanders Past Lady Pirates on Education Day

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program used a strong second half effort to down visiting Hampton at Thursday morning's education day.

KEY STATS
  • Williams, Carlson, Shipp-Davis and Firebaugh all finished in double figures scoring as the Highlanders offense was a balanced effort.
  • Radford shot an impressive 50% on 44 attempts and 30% from three.
  • Turnovers were aplenty in the meeting with 49 turnovers between the two squads.
  • After going 0-7 from three in the first quarter, Radford shot 50% on 10 attempts from three the rest of the way.
  • Hampton did not hit a three-pointer on 10 attempts.

PLAY BY PLAY
With over 3,000 kids in the arena for Radford's annual education day, both teams took some time to settle into their offenses in front of a raucous crowd. Hampton took an early lead, but Radford responded quickly with Taylor Napper scoring the first points of the day.

Through seven and a half minutes, though, that was all Radford's offense was able to sink. Turnovers hurt the Highlanders until Adriana Shipp-Davis was able to stop a 6-0 Lady Pirates run with a layup. Adelyn Traylor-Walker added a layup of her own, but the Highlanders trailed 12-6 through the opening quarter.

After Napper sunk a pair of free throws to start the second quarter, Radford's offense found its step. Kirah Dandridge, Shipp-Davis and Cate Carlson all added buckets to give Radford its first lead of the day 15-14 with 6:03 left in the half.

Hampton would pace back ahead, but with 1:19 left in the second quarter, Radford got its first three of the day from Joi Williams to tie the game. Free throws from Traylor-Walker gave Radford a 26-24 edge at halftime despite trailing for almost 19 minutes in the half.

Hampton would briefly tie the game back up to start the second half, but Radford would take full control from there. Made shots from Makayla Firebaugh and Napper put Radford back ahead. Firebaugh sunk a three at the 7:02 mark in the third quarter to give Radford its biggest lead so far at 33-28.

Williams extended that lead with a layup of her own, but the Lady Pirates refused to go away using some points off costly turnovers to pull the game within a point. With just 30 seconds left in the third, Dandridge secured a big layup to give Radford the 41-38 lead before the quarter ended.

Out of the break, graduate transfer Shipp-Davis took over scoring eight straight points. Two of those shots came from beyond the arc as the Highlanders offense heated up from deep. Leading 49-42, Hampton got two straight and-ones to pull things back within a point.

This time it was Carlson who responded with a three-ball to once again pace Radford ahead. Radford would keep the lead the rest of the way despite some Hampton scoring late. Firebaugh, Williams and Carlson each helped seal the game for Radford in a 65-55 finish.
