Brandow and Stephens Lead Highlanders to Victory Over N.C. Central

DURHAM, N.C. – The Radford women's tennis program earned their first win of the season Thursday afternoon in a tight 4-3 finish getting huge three-set singles victories from Emily Brandow and Michaela Stephens.

In a doubles point that would prove pivotal, the action was similarly exciting. The duo Brandow and Lexi Smolder kicked things off with a dominant win 6-1 on court three. After N.C. Central took court two, it came down to the top flight.

The duo Julia Abrams and Stephens were forced into a tiebreaker for the early 1-0 advantage. Abrams and Stephens dug deep and pulled out the win 7-6(2) to make sure Radford had that early lead.

Moving on to singles play, Radford focused on getting three courts to seal the win. After N.C. Central took courts one and five, Radford got a crucial point thanks to Brooke Murphy on court six who won decisively 6-2, 6-0.

Tied up at 2-2, N.C. Central got a win on court three singles to pull within one court of the clincher. Play came down to courts two and four with both moving into third sets. Brandow and Stephens both won their first sets but dropped their second sets in close battles to force the tiebreakers.

On court two, the freshman Stephens earned the biggest win so far of her young Highlander career winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. The senior Brandow finished strong as well as she won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and Radford came out of Durham, N.C. with the thrilling 4-3 victory.

Radford has a quick turnaround before their next match which is currently slated to be against Missouri on Saturday, February 3rd. While the meeting technically counts as a home match for Radford, the contest will be taking place at Liberty's indoor courts in Lynchburg, Va.
