Defenses Clash as Radford Falls Just Short in Overtime

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford women's basketball program dug deep for a gritty defensive performance Wednesday night at Winthrop, but not enough shots fell as the Highlanders fell in overtime 54-51.

Terissa Lavoile-Brice opened the scoring for Radford in the opening minute in a game that turned into a slugfest of two of the better defenses in the conference. Radford didn't score again until the fourth minute as Ashlyn Traylor-Walker pulled Radford to down just 4-5. Pa'Shence Traylor-Walker followed with another make, but Radford was held scoreless the rest of the quarter trailing 10-6.

Ellie Taylor would provide a spark to start the second quarter, converting an and-one to pull back within 11-9. Back-to-back threes had the Eagles threatening to pull away, but a few defensive stops and makes from Taylor and Lavoile-Brice steadied the ship. A three-pointer by Olivia Wagner had Radford trailing just 19-18 with 3:40 left in the half.

Pa'Shence tied the game up at 21-all with another and-one with free throws by both sides tying the game back up at 23-all. A second-chance tip-in gave Winthrop a brief edge, but Joi Williams checked in and quickly sunk a shot to have the game tied at 25-all at halftime.

Out of the half Winthrop quickly hit a three, but Williams stayed hot hitting Radford's first shot and sinking a three-pointer to give Radford its first lead since the opening minutes at 30-28. Both teams would traded baskets for the rest of the third quarter, but an 8-0 run by Lavoile-Brice quickly sprung Radford back in front for a 42-38 lead headed into the final quarter.

Layups by Williams and Taniya Hanner helped fend off the Eagles attack early in the fourth as Radford would lead just 46-44 with five minutes to go. After Taylor hit a big layup to give Radford back a lead of 48-46, Winthrop hit a big three-pointer for a late lead with 2:25 to go. Neither team would hit a shot the rest of the way, but a clutch free throw from Hanner sent the game to overtime tied at 49.

Radford struck first thanks to Hanner at the 3:48 mark, but Winthrop would hold Radford scoreless the rest of the way. The Eagles chipped away with two straight layups and a free throw for a 7-0 run that gave them all the offense they'd need to hold on to win 54-51.
