BOX SCORE HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a slow start in a 20-10 loss on the road against High Point Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Highlanders made history as they have never surpassed seven goals against the Panthers until today.
For the Highlanders, it was all defensive plays for the majority of the first quarter. Multiple efforts held the Panthers scoreless for the first 3 minutes of play with a save by
Olivia Hunter and a caused turnover by
Margaret Gleason. After the first goal, High Point went on a 6-0 run. Despite being a man-down,
Hannah Hanger saw an opening as she fed the ball to
Mady Cheney to put Radford on the board. Radford continued this momentum as Hunter saved a shot and Cheney took advantage of the free-position shot to set the game at 6-2. The Panthers were able to get one more goal before the end of the quarter.
Although High Point was able to get the first goal of the second period,
Molly O'Brien responded almost immediately with a feed from Gleason. From there, the Panthers found themselves on another run, this time sparked by
Kaitlyn Lytton as she bounced the ball right into the net putting the game at 13-4.
The third quarter brought the least amount of scoring on both ends. Caused turnovers by
Lauren Davis slowed the Panther's offense, holding them to two goals. After a High Point turnover, the Highlanders were determined to add to the score. Ground balls picked up by Gleason and
Erica Lawrence maintained the Highlander's possession. Cheney earned herself a hat trick as she swung the ball and found the back of the net, setting the score 16-5 during a man-up opportunity. High Point responded. Davis caused another turnover, marking her third of the day, giving Radford possession. Lawrence took note of High Point's goalie being away from the net and was able to obtain a goal on the empty net, making the game 17-6.
Right off the draw control, Gleason won the ball allowing Lawrence to obtain her second goal of the game. High Point once again responded. However,
Linley Tirrell made history as she scored the eighth goal against High Point, the most goals Radford has ever scored when facing the Panthers. The scoring didn't end there, as Lytton put up her second goal of the game. With just 30 seconds left, Tirrell scored the final goal of the game to put the Highlanders in double-digits. Ultimately, Radford was unable to catch High Point with the Panthers winning 20-10.
