Women’s Tennis Digs Deep, Seals Thrilling 4-3 Win on Senior Day

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's tennis program picked up an exciting 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon over Big South foe Presbyterian thanks to four singles victories.

Before the match, Radford honored their two seniors Ameek Batth and Emily Brandow as a part of Senior Day.

After back-to-back close, 4-3 losses in conference play the Highlanders took on Saturday's match with the mentality of not backing down. After Presbyterian took the early 1-0 lead after doubles play, the team buckled down for a match that would come down to the final court once again.

The reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, Michaela Stephens, would make the first statement of the afternoon. Stephens was excellent on court two, dispatching her opponent 6-2, 6-1 for one of her most dominant wins of the season.

Tied at one-all, Presbyterian would respond with a win on court three to take a 2-1 lead. On court six, it was the senior Batth who made a huge move in her first singles action of the season. Getting the senior day nod, Batth came up big winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Tied up at 2-2, once again Presbyterian responded with a win on court one that gave them a 3-2 edge. With just two courts left in action, Radford would need both to come out with the win. Both remaining courts would go three sets setting the stage for an exciting finish.

After dropping her first set, Lexi Smolder would return with force for the Highlanders. On court four, Smolder came all the way back and won a back-and-forth tiebreaker set 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to tie the game at three-matches all.

After a strong start, Rachel Ekanem was forced into a third set in her match on court five. Ekanem dug deep and burst out to a big early lead 4-0 before things tightened up at 4-3. Mere seconds after Smolder's win on court four, Ekanem followed clinching the match in Radford's favor on court five 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

With the regular season now in the review mirror, the Highlanders will await their fate for potential Big South postseason play with the conclusion of the conference's schedule early next week.
