Highlanders Drop Tough Road Match at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Radford women's soccer program fell in a tough one Sunday afternoon in their first road action of the season against a strong West Virginia squad with a 5-0 final.

KEY STATS

Starting goalie Jordan Phillips added three more saves in 45 minutes of action. Lexi Radvanyi entered in relief and tallied two more saves to the team's total for the afternoon.
Three of the Highlanders five shots against the Mountaineers came on goal.
The Highlanders committed seven fouls to the Mountaineers' 15 with both teams being called offside just once.
Paige Olson led the offense with three shots, two coming on goal with the third blocked.

PLAY BY PLAY
In the first half, the Radford defense stood strong through the opening 20 minutes. The Highlanders and Mountaineers traded shots until the 22nd minute where West Virginia broke the tie for a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked the Highlanders' first deficit of the young season, not trailing through the first 112 minutes of action in 2024.

From there, the Mountaineers added on two more goals before halftime to bring a 3-0 lead over the Highlanders into the break. Coming out for the second half, West Virginia would tally two more goals to move the score to its eventual final 5-0.

In the 78th minute West Virginia earned a penalty kick but Lexi Radvanyi, who subbed in at half time, made a strong save on the attempt to limit another goal.

NOTABLES

The save off a penalty kick by Radvanyi in the second half was the Highlanders first save on such a shot attempt in regulation since 2017.
The Highlanders continue to keep shot attempts on goal, shooting 73% of their shots on goal through their first two matches.
The match was the fourth-ever meeting between the two squads and first regular season meeting in Morgantown since 2003.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH

An early goal proved costly for Presbyterian who dropped a 1-0 decision to College of Charleston.
Winthrop fell 2-0 to The Citadel as the Bulldogs held the Eagles scoreless despite 13 shots with four on goal.
High Point visits an ACC foe in Clemson for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
Longwood opens their season later today with a home match against Loyola Md.
UNC Asheville makes their second straight road trip with a visit to Western Carolina.
Charleston Southern makes a trek out west to play Grand Canyon with a 10 p.m. (ET) kickoff.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders return to action this upcoming week for two home matches. Radford will host Emory & Henry on Thursday, August 22nd before welcoming back Radford University students with a match against South Carolina State on August 25th.
