Last Second Goal Draws Tie for Highlanders Against Spiders

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program got a last second goal off the head of Eileen Albers Thursday night to earn a 2-2 tie against the Richmond Spiders.

KEY STATS
  • In an intense offensive battle all night, both teams were deadlocked in total shots as Radford shot 15 with seven on goal while Richmond shot 14 with eight on goal.
  • Despite the volley of shots by both sides, just six total corners were taken by the two squads.
  • Nine different Highlanders recorded shots tonight with Ava Kertgate totaling the most with five.
  • Lexi Radvanyi subbed in for the second half in the net and earned four saves that were crucial for the eventual tie.
  • Both teams were active with subbing on the night, but defenders Helena Willson and Lilly Clayton played the full 90 for their squad.

PLAY BY PLAY
After a quiet start to the night that saw just a few shots from both sides, it was Radford who would strike first and change the script. Ava Kertgate took  a well-played ball deep into Richmond territory and struck it well past multiple defenders from the top of the box to give Radford the early 1-0 advantage.

Richmond didn't wait long, however, earning a corner kick just seven minutes later sneaking a shot past the defense to even the game at one. Radford would get a pair of shots off on goal before the half closed, but both teams remained deadlocked.

Richmond came out for the second half with a force only needing 39 seconds to put themselves up by one. With a full second half still to play, Radford went to work to try and find an equalizer against a stout Spiders defense.

At the 70th minute, Richmond got their biggest attempt to pull away of the second half. Deep in Radford territory, just feet from the box, a Spider player got a one on one opportunity against Radvanyi who made a great save on the attempt. Another Spider followed and put another solid shot on goal, but Radvanyi once again came up with the big save to keep it a 2-1 game.

Those pair of saves would prove crucial in the final moments of the match. Radford got one last good look to tie with the game winding down thanks to a beautiful feed into the box from about midfield by Lilly Short. That feed found the head of Eileen Albers who placed a perfect header out of reach from the goalie and into the back of the net with 35 seconds remaining.

The 2-2 deadlock would remain over the final 30 seconds of the match, finishing a thrilling tie between the two squads.

NOTABLES
  • Radford's last tie against an opponent was on September 21st, 2021, also at home against Campbell 1-1.
  • Radford and Richmond have now tied in back-to-back matches, last year's final coming in at a much quieter 0-0 final.
  • Albers pushed her season goal total to five tonight, one away from her freshman year total of six.
  • Kertgate's goal was the second of her season, tying her season-high set last year during her debut campaign.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"We knew it was going to be this kind of game. They play dramatically different than us so it's a great test before conference play. I was disappointed with our performance against their set pieces tonight, but I was so proud of the way we played the full game. We played good soccer, mixed it up and we had so much heart to battle back and tie it up." – Ben Sohrabi.

  • Winthrop used a pair of second half goals to pull away and defeat VMI 2-0.
