Late Albers Header Draws Second Straight Tie for Women’s Soccer

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program drew their second straight tie of the season Thursday afternoon, 1-1, against reigning Ohio Valley champions Morehead State.

KEY STATS
  • Eileen Albers' goal was her sixth of the season tying her for the team lead with Lilly Short.
  • The Highlanders and Eagles were tied up in multiple stat categories as well including shots (12), shots on goal (7) and corners (4).
  • Helena Willson was the lone Highlander to play the full 90 minutes and led the team with four shots.
  • Goalkeepers Jordan Phillips and Lexi Radvanyi split time in the net today each captaining one half and totaling six saves.

PLAY BY PLAY
Back on the road for the first time in two weeks, the Highlanders faced a strong challenge in the hosts Morehead State who are the reigning Ohio Valley champions. On a slick turf surface, both teams struggled to get scoring opportunities through the first 45 minutes of action.

Radford and Morehead State combined for just 3 shots on goal and just a handful of corners. With premium touches scarce, Radford took a daring chance to start the second half. From the opening kickoff of the second half about 50 yards out, Helena Willson took a deep shot that the Eagles' keeper just barely made a stop on from scoring to keep things tied.

In the 62nd minute, the Eagles were the first to break the scoreless tie off a strong move close to the net that was just out of reach. Not backing down, Radford built a commanding presence to control possession through the rest of the contest.

In the 82nd minute, that relentless pressure paid off as Radford was able to find the equalizer. One of the nation's top goal-producers, Paige Olson, stepped up once again for Radford placing a perfect cross to set up Albers for the score. Just like she did last week against Richmond, Albers placed the header perfectly to tie the game in the closing minutes 1-1.

NOTABLES
  • Radford finishes the nonconference slate with a winning record on the road, going 2-1-1 with the only loss coming at West Virginia.
  • The two programs had not met since 2002, Radford still owns the series edge at a 3-0-1 mark.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"Again I think we had the opportunities to win today but on the road it can be tough. I was glad to see us fight back and get the draw. Now we prepare for conference and take the lessons we've learned in nonconference and get better." – Ben Sohrabi.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Gardner-Webb hosts South Carolina State for a 6 p.m. start.
  • USC Upstate makes a trip to the Midwest to take on South Dakota State at 7 p.m.

UP NEXT
With nonconference play now in the rear-view mirror, the Highlanders turn their focus to the Big South. Radford opens conference play on the road against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, September 25th for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+.
