Two First Half Goals Lead to Tie at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer program opened Big South play Wednesday night drawing a 2-2 tie on the road against Gardner-Webb.

KEY STATS
  • Radford outshot Gardner-Webb 23-8 in the match, eight of those Highlander shots coming on goal.
  • Lilly Short's goal was her seventh of the season, moving her back into the team lead.
  • Ashley Loundermon's goal was her second of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford and Gardner-Webb each opened their Big South seasons Saturday night in a hard-fought battle. The intensity was on display throughout as Radford, a team who hadn't drawn a yellow in over a month, was carded twice on the night.

Radford's first card came in a tough spot after the refs reviewed the replay that would award Gardner-Webb a penalty kick. Jordan Phillips got a stop on the shot, but the ball took an unfortunate bounce into the back of the net to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

That lead was short-lived as Radford would immediately respond. Just six minutes later in the 29th minute, Short would groove through the defense and rip off a shot to tie the match. In the 35th minute, Radford kept rolling as Jashyra Johnson placed a perfect cross where both Ashley Loundermon and Paige Olson came crashing in for the goal.

Leading 2-1 coming into the second half, Radford would maintain a majority of possession. Despite only allowing three Gardner-Webb shots over the final 45 minutes, one of those shots would find the back of the net to even the match back up at two-all where it would stand for the rest of the game.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"We have to be better in critical moments of the game. We had our chances to put this team away and we missed our opportunities. Defensively, we limited them to very few chances but need to make tackles and stops in those critical moments." – Ben Sohrabi.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Charleston Southern rolled with four goals to defeat Winthrop 4-1.
  • High Point picked up the lone shutout of the night winning 2-0 over Longwood.
  • USC Upstate and Presbyterian also locked up in a 2-2 final.
