Trio of Second Half Goals Powers Women’s Soccer to Road Win Over Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer program used a trio of goals in the second half Thursday night to power past Appalachian State in a 4-2 victory.

KEY STATS
  • Jashyra Johnson's two goals within minutes of each other in the second half marked her first goals of the season and first multi-goal performance of her career.
  • Eileen Albers assisted a trio of goals tonight, a new single-game career-high.
  • Radford was outshot 25-11, but eight of their 11 shots came on goal.
  • Jordan Phillips earned five saves on the night including one off a penalty kick, Radford's second stop on a penalty kick this season.

PLAY BY PLAY
From kickoff to the finish, the offensive intensity was on display throughout between the Highlanders and Mountaineers. Just 13 minutes in, it was Appalachian State who struck first to take an early 1-0 lead.

Radford would battle hard to try and get back into it, finally breaking through in the 32nd minute. Thanks to a beautiful feed from Albers, Paige Olson was able to strike from deep outside the box towards the opposite corner for her first goal of the season, tying the match.

Appalachian State struck back just three minutes however to retake their one goal lead at 2-1. Radford was forced to dig deep and find an answer as the game moved into the second half.

Five minutes into the second half, the Mountaineers threatened to pull away as they drew a penalty kick at the 50th minute. Jordan Phillips was up to the task, making a great move stopping her motion and switching directions at the last second to make the save.

That save would prove pivotal as Radford's offense would soon strike. After a deep kick found Albers racing towards the goal, the sophomore passed it off to her fellow sophomore Johnson who made a great play on the ball. Johnson burst past the final Mountaineer defender and placed a perfect shot equalizing the match at 2-2.

Just three minutes later, that duo would team up once again. From the corner, Olson fed the ball to Albers who once again found Johnson to give Radford their first lead of the day at 3-2. Radford wasn't done from there as in the 66th minute Katie Purnell drew a foul inside the box for a penalty kick try. Reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week Helena Willson took the shot and nailed it for the 4-2 lead.

From there, Radford's defense stood strong and kept Appalachian State scoreless for the entire second half. The Highlanders took the 4-2 win, their first outright win in Boone, N.C. since 2018.

NOTABLES
  • Radford's four straight wins is their longest during the regular season since their six match winning streak that closed out the 2021 regular season.
  • Radford now owns a 10-5-1 margin over Appalachian State in program history, winning four of the last five matches with one tie.
  • Albers' three assists set not just a single-game high for the sophomore, but is the most she's scored in a season through her young Radford career.
  • Appalachian State had allowed just four goals all season coming into the match. Radford's four goals are the most by a Mountaineer opponent since September 17, 2021.
  • The Radford win snapped a streak of 13 games without a loss at home for Appalachian State dating back to 2021.

HEAD COACH SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"This was a tough road win. I was proud of how resilient the group was. They could have put their heads down many times in the match, but they fought through. We made a couple changes at halftime and the team implemented them well. It was a game where we were going to have to dig deep, and we showed that." – Ben Sohrabi.
