
Cross Country Programs Start Seasons on Right Foot at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford men's and women's cross-country programs started their 2024 campaign Friday afternoon at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a slew of personal bests and new top 10 marks in the program record book.

The women were first to compete in the 4k against six schools and 68 total competitors. Leading the pack was Sophie Magson who set a new personal best at 14:23.7 and improved her record book placement to second all-time. Right behind her was Kate McLearen who also set a new PR. McLearen's time of 14:37.4 vaults her into the program top 10 list at fourth.

Two freshmen, Sienna Bailey and Claire Keefe, made their Highlander debuts and were the third and fourth Highlanders to place, respectively. Megan Cash, competing in her first 4k as a Highlander, was the fifth Highlander to cross the finish line.

Mia Farley and Kayla Fields both set new personal bests in the 4k as well. Freshmen Katelyn Campbell, Sylvia Hemmer, Kasey Rosenbaum and Summer Hamlin all also made their Highlander debuts at the meet.

The men shortly followed the women's race where six schools and 79 competitors took the course. Sophomore Charlie Dance was the first to finish for Radford setting a new personal best and a time that now ranks second all-time in the record book. Right behind Dance was Clay Kelly who also set a new personal best running a time good for third all-time in the program record book.

Rounding out the program record finishes were Maxton Sowers, who improved his previous time in the top 10, and Hayat Khan who moved into ninth all-time. Freshmen Ryan Connelly and Logan Hamilton also made their debuts as Highlanders in the meet.
