Electric First Half Guides Women’s Basketball to Strong Win Over Charleston Southern

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program used an electric first half effort to power past Charleston Southern in a strong 74-62 victory Saturday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center.

  • Radford has shot over 40% in each of the last four straight conference games.
  • Four different Highlanders finished in double figures scoring including Carlson (19), Adelyn Traylor-Walker (15), Taylor Napper (11), and Joi Williams (10).
  • The last time Radford had four different players score in double figures against a Big South foe was also against Charleston Southern in February 2024.

  • The Buccaneers were held to just 1-19 (5.3%) from three-point range.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford's offense continued its hot streak as of late right out the gates to immediately build a big lead on the Buccaneers. After a three from Carlson and a layup from Napper, Radford was up 5-0 and never looked back. Just four minutes into the game, Carlson hit another two threes to put Radford up 11-2.

A quick run by the Buccaneers would tighten things to a 13-12 Radford lead, but the Highlanders ended the quarter on a 12-2 run behind makes from Makayla Firebaugh, Kirah Dandridge and Anna Stromberg. Up 25-14, Radford kept firing with the first six points of the second quarter.

An old fashioned three-point play by Carlson followed by another make from deep put Radford ahead 37-18 as the sophomore continued to shine. A layup by Kirby Brown would seal the offensive efforts through the first half, as Radford led 39-22. The 39 points were Radford's most against a Division I opponent through the opening half.

Traylor-Walker ensured the offense kept the heat in the second half as she hit a pair of three-pointers. During an 18-0 run, Radford got seven points from Napper and five points from Williams to lead 63-26. With the game blown open, Radford looked to hold on over the final 12 minutes of play.

Charleston Southern put forth a new defensive intensity that helped force some turnovers and allow for an extended scoring run. Radford's lead would be shortened to as much as 12 down the stretch. After both teams traded technical fouls in the closing seconds, it was Radford who held on for the 74-62 win.
