Women’s Basketball Drops Close Contest at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford women's basketball program was locked in a defensive battle at Longwood Wednesday night, coming up just short in the closing seconds falling 56-51.

KEY STATS
  • Joi Williams scored or assisted all or Radford's 14 points in the first quarter, she would finish the night with 19 points of her own.
  • Kirah Dandridge had a solid night on her birthday finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Radford struggled from three-point range shooting 4-25 but still managed to shoot 36% overall.
  • Longwood's defense was as advertised forcing 21 Radford turnovers, but Radford was able to mitigate some of the damage by forcing 20 Longwood turnovers.

PLAY BY PLAY
With Longwood coming in as the hottest team in the Big South, Radford faced a tall task and met it head on early. The sophomore Williams would step up big time as Radford's offense looked to find its step. Williams opened the game by scoring the first nine points to help Radford keep pace with Longwood.

Down 16-11 in the closing seconds of the first quarter, Williams nailed a three to make it just a two-point deficit. Anna Stromberg would score the first four points of the second quarter while Adriana Shipp-Davis also checked in to seal a 9-0 Radford run and 20-16 lead.

Coming out of a Longwood timeout, the Lancers scored four straight to tie the game back up before Shipp-Davis put Radford back ahead. Thanks to a make from Taylor Napper and some strong defense down the stretch, it was Radford who held the 24-22 advantage at the halftime break.

Adelyn Traylor-Walker began the second half with a tough and-one while Dandridge checked in for a three, her first of seven points in the second half, to keep Radford ahead 30-27. Longwood had an answer for each make from Radford, however, as the two teams locked into a back and forth affair.

Radford would be held to just five points over the final five minutes of the third allowing Longwood to keep their lead at 42-41 with 10 minutes to play. Radford's offense was limited in the fourth quarter, but the defense stood strong to keep things close. With two minutes to go, Williams got a huge layup while Napper converted two clutch free throws to tie the game at 51-51.

With just seven seconds left in the game, Longwood got a deep jumper to pull ahead by two. That shot would ultimately decide the game as Radford wasn't able to find the equalizer, falling in the 56-51 finish.
