Women's Soccer Dominates Gardner-Webb, Clinches Outright Conference Crown

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Neither the Runnin' Bulldogs nor the rain could stop the Highlanders, as the Radford women's soccer team put away Gardner-Webb 3-0 on Wednesday night. With already a share of the Big South secured, the win puts Radford at 21 points, three clear of USC Upstate in the final conference standings.

KEY STATS

  • The Highlanders outshot their opponent 30-14, including having 17 shots on goal.
  • Lilly Short scored her ninth goal of the season, seventh in conference play, and fifth in the last four matches.
  • Paige Olson's assist to Short for the first goal moves her to second on the Radford all-time assists list with 28 in her career.
  • The Highlanders finished with seven wins in conference play. It's the sixth time they've had 7+ conference wins in a season and first since having seven in 2019.

PLAY BY PLAY

Radford dominated possession early and mounted pressure with several crosses by Olson and shots getting close in the opening minutes. In the 22nd minute, the Highlanders finally broke through on a corner kick. Mallory Harmison took the corner and sent it just in front of the net. A deflected header by Olson found Short who found the net for the opening score.

It did not take long in the second half for Radford to add to their lead. A fantastic cross by Jashyra Johnson found Caitlyn Nottingham, who kept the ball alive with a header back to Ashley Loundermon. The senior's shot got past the Gardner-Webb goalkeeper, making it 2-0 in the 59th minute.

The most spectacular score came off the left foot of Magda Carpenter. From just outside the penalty arc, the junior tucked her shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the season. Lexi Radvanyi corralled a few desperate attempts by Gardner-Webb late, finishing with five saves for the clean sheet.

QUOTABLE SOHRABI

"I wasn't exactly sure what to expect tonight," said Head Coach Ben Sohrabi. "But the girls were ready. We played extremely well from beginning to end. I was glad to see the team win the outright Big South regular season championship, get 10 wins, and push their conference total to seven. New season begins next Thursday. We will prepare and try to carry our momentum."

UP NEXT

By locking up the top seed, Radford receives a bye into the Big South Tournament semifinals. They'll await the winner of No. 4 seed High Point and No. 5 seed Gardner-Webb. The match will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 6 at Matthews Sportsplex (Matthews, N.C.) on ESPN+.
