Women’s Soccer Battles Late, Upends USC Upstate 2-1

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program used a pair of second half goals to push past USC Upstate 2-1 Saturday night in a physical, intense match.

KEY STATS
  • Amani Green played a large role in the final, assisting the game-tying goal and scoring the game-winning goal.
  • Lilly Short's goal was her fourth of the season and second straight in Big South play.
  • The goal given up snapped a streak of 228 straight minutes without allowing a goal in conference play.
  • Lexi Radvanyi's ten saves are a new career high for the junior, besting her previous high of nine.
  • Radford last opened conference play with three straight wins in 2016.

PLAY BY PLAY
Back in action for the first time in a week, the two squads were locked in what looked to be another classic meeting between two teams atop the Big South standings. While neither team broke the net through the first 45 minutes, it wasn't without trying. USC Upstate was able to fire off eight shots with two that came on goal requiring spectacular stops from the goalkeeper Radvanyi.

Injuries would also plague the Highlanders early, as multiple starters including Jashyra Johnson and Green would need to leave the field of play. Going into the second half, the Spartans attack persisted resulting in a goal at the 48th minute that put Radford behind 1-0.

The Highlanders regrouped and found renewed energy from that point on. After recording just three shots up to that point, Radford finished the match with a new pressure that resulted in seven more shots with five coming on goal. In the 67th minute, Radford would finally break through.

All the way back past the midfield line in Radford territory was Green who put an incredible strike on the ball that soared all the way into the Spartans box. Short, on the run, placed a perfect header past the outstretched goalie that broke the deficit and tied the match at 1-1.

Just 12 minutes later searching for the deciding answer, Hunter Rosenberg was able to draw a penalty inside the box that was confirmed by video assistance. Green stepped up to take the shot and left no doubt, putting the Highlanders ahead 2-1 with just 12 minutes to play. The Spartans would threaten, but never break through thanks to some more incredible saves by Radvanyi, as Radford held strong to seal the pivotal 2-1 victory.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"That was a great team win. We had to work through many injuries and other players really stood up," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I was unhappy we conceded on that set piece due to an unorganized problem. I was really proud to see our team not put their head down and fight back. It was a spectacular ball by Amani and header from Lilly. It was awesome to come back and win this match and be first in the conference."

UP NEXT
Radford will look to continue their hot start when they go back on the road to visit UNC Asheville next Saturday, October 11th. The match will kick off at 2 p.m. with all the action streaming on ESPN+.
