Highlanders Make McGuire All-Time Winningest Coach in School History with Education Day Win

Radford, Va. – With the help of a complete team performance and thousands of cheering primary school from the area, the Radford Highlanders knocked off Loyola Maryland, 59-50, on Tuesday at the Dedmon Center. With the win, Head Coach Mike McGuire passes Radford Hall of Fame coach Pat Barrett for the most wins in Radford basketball history with 194.

KEY STATS
  • Nice shattered her career high with a 23-point outburst. Her previous high was 10.
  • Radford forced a season-high 27 turnovers, with Ellie Taylor, Kirah Dandridge, and Anaiah Jenkins all recording three or more steals.
  • The Highlanders totaled 42 bench points, including the 23 from Nice and 16 from Cate Carlson.
  • Radford outscored Loyola (MD) with 22 points off turnovers to the Greyhounds' 10.

PLAY BY PLAY

Radford's stellar defense dominated most of the first quarter. After Loyola scored the first points, the Highlanders answered with a 10-2 run which included Nice's first two scores of the day. After taking a timeout, the Greyhounds battled back to get the deficit to a point after 10 minutes.

The second stanza went back-and-forth, with both sides grabbing the lead early. Key trifectas from Cherish Haywood and Joi Williams kept the Highlanders within one position throughout the period. Loyola hit a three in the final minute, but Cate Carlson answered with a corner three to draw things even at 21-21 going into the break. Despite winning the turnover battle by seven in the opening 20 minutes, the Highlanders shot just 27.6 percent from the field.

Better shot selection and continued defensive stops led to the Highlanders building a lead in the third quarter. Loyola led by four out of the gates before Anna Stromberg and Nice scored on back-to-back trips. The former walk-on was scorching hot from the field, adding two threes and a layup to give Radford a lead they would not relinquish. Carlson attempted to keep up with Nice with another bucket, which gave the Highlanders a five-point cushion going into the fourth.

Getting to the line was the difference in the final chapter for the Highlanders. Georgia Simonsen finished a three-point play from the line, giving her team their largest lead at 10 with seven minutes left. This was followed by and-one trips by Taylor and Nice. Radford led by as much as 14 but Loyola refused to go away. Some more late free throws cashed in by Nice clinched things for Radford in the final seconds gave Radford their second win in as many home games.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE

"Angelina's been amazing since she stepped foot on campus," said McGuire about the sophomore guard in the postgame press conference. "For her to do what she did last year, to come to Radford as a walk-on and to be as talented as she is. And accept that role last year. Being able to put her on scholarship was one of the easiest decisions I've ever had to make. She's a great player – we saw that today. I think she's going to be exceptional. I don't think she knows how good she's going to be. But she's worked very hard every day and is very coachable. She was a major difference maker. At times, she was the best player on the floor. I mean, 23 points off the bench today is huge. You're starting to see what Angelina is all about, which I'm really excited about."
