Women’s Basketball Falls at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In their third battle against a power opponent this season, the Radford women's basketball team dropped a 77-46 decision to the Virginia Cavaliers at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday.

KEY STATS
  • Joi Williams scored a season-best 10 points to lead the Highlanders.
  • Angelina Nice added nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.
  • Virginia dominated the boards, outrebounding Radford 48-19. The Cavaliers totaled 20 offensive rebounds and 28 second chance points.
PLAY BY PLAY

Nice picked up right where she left off in her last game, making each of Radford's first three scores. A great find by Cate Carlson to Anna Stromberg got the Highlanders within two points at the first quarter media timeout, trailing 11-9. The Cavaliers came out strong out of the break, going on a 12-2 run to end the first chapter to lead by a dozen.

Georgia Simonsen battled in the paint to get a couple of shots to fall early in the second quarter. The Highlanders battled to keep the deficit within 20 points, coming away with some stops. Joi Williams had a nice steal and basket to get the deficit to 15 with just under three minutes left until the break. The Cavaliers continued to find nice looks to lead 42-24 at half.

The Highlanders had a few standout moments in the second half. Williams hit a trifecta to break out of a dry spell. Later, after committing a turner, Nice ran back and made a stellar block on defense, which led to an Ava Sawi bucket. Despite a 6-0 run to close the quarter, the Cavaliers led by 21 points after three.

With the result established by the fourth quarter, several underclassmen made the most of their opportunities, with Sawi and Lindsee Williams getting some minutes. Virginia dominated down the stretch, outscoring the Highlanders 17-7 in the final chapter for a 31-point win.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE

"Virginia has a lot of great size and such a strong interior presence," said Mike McGuire in a postgame interview. "We have to figure out the rebounding. For us to have 19 rebounds in a game is, quite frankly, unacceptable. We need to evaluate a lot of what we're doing. I do think our team did a good job because they were missing their first shots quite often. But we just could not come up with the stop enough so we could get out in transition. Really, rebounding and turnovers (were the difference). That's usually the case against a power four opponent. We've got a few home games coming up, and we have to regroup and get better."

UP NEXT

The Highlanders begin a two-game home stretch on Wednesday, November 19, where they welcome the Furman Paladins. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. from the Dedmon Center on ESPN+.
