Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Radford Comes Up Just Short in Opening Contest at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball team held a lead into halftime but ultimately fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 71-64, on Monday night.

KEY STATS
  • Ellie Taylor dropped in a pair of threes with 11 points in her first game since the 2023-24 season finale.
  • Georgia Simonsen finished one rebound short of a double-double, adding 11 points in her first career collegiate game.
  • Wake Forest made 30 attempts from the free throw stripe and converted 20, compared to Radford's 6-of-10.
PLAY BY PLAY

Wake Forest scored the game's first points with a pair of free throws, but Cate Carlson answered for the first Highlander bucket of the season. Scoring was hard to come by early, as consecutive scores by Joi Williams and a three by Adelyn Traylor-Walker gave Radford an 8-5 advantage at the end of the opening chapter.

The Demon Deacons opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run, nearly putting together a double-digit lead. The Highlanders responded by hitting some huge three-pointers. Williams ended the quarter drought with a trifecta before Simonsen pulled Radford within one. Radford tied it late in the half with an Anaia Jenkins score in the paint, then Taylor beat the horn on an offensive rebound to make it 27-25 Highlanders at the half.

The lead went back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, with a couple of clutch shots by Traylor-Walker kept Radford within range. However, Wake Forest returned the favor on Taylor's buzzer-beater with a three to end the quarter, putting the Demon Deacons ahead for good.

An Angelina Nice three-pointer brought Radford back within one with just under nine minutes left. It was the closest Radford would get, with a punishing string of three pointers made by Wake Forest in the middle of the quarter giving the hosts a nine-point advantage. The Demon Deacons converted all six of their final free throw attempts to win by seven.

McGUIRE QUOTABLE

"I'm really proud of our team," said Head Coach Mike McGuire after the game. "We came down here with a mindset to win. I think the difference in the game was our two lulls. One in the first half, one in the second half. That was the difference. We have to defend with discipline. We can't give Wake Forest 20 free throws. We were minus 14 in that area. It stings when you lose by seven. I think we have a lot of upside and can grow a lot. Just a good lesson on discipline and what it takes to win at this level."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders continue their foray against ACC opponents with a contest at Georgia Tech coming on Thursday. Tip-off is at 10:00 a.m. from McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta and can be seen on ACCN Extra (ACCNX) and heard on WRAD 1460 AM.
