Stout Defense Leads Women’s Basketball to Decisive Road Win at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford women's basketball program held UNC Asheville to an opponent-low shooting percentage Wednesday night towards a dominant 63-39 victory.
 
KEY STATS
  • The 39 points scored by UNC Asheville are a season-low for a Radford opponent, as was their 22% shooting mark.
  • The 24-point win is Radford's largest margin of victory on the road in Big South play since beating Winthrop 72-46 during the 2020-21 season.
  • Radford shot an impressive 57% overall thanks to an aggressive effort scoring 44 of their 63 points in the paint.
  • The Highlanders also outscored the Bulldogs 27-11 for points off turnovers.
  • Cate Carlson led the scoring effort with 12 points while Makayla Firebaugh and Adriana Shipp-Davis also scored in double figures.
  • Joi Williams finished the night with seven assists, a new single-game career high for the sophomore.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
While the Highlanders wouldn't get their first made shot of the night until four minutes into the first quarter, after that it was a consistent effort that would help the Highlanders lead of the other 36 minutes. Taylor Napper got the scoring started while a three from Shipp-Davis put Radford up 5-2.
 
The Highlanders other lone makes of the opening quarter came from Kirah Dandridge and Firebaugh for the quiet 9-5 lead. A big second quarter got kicked off thanks to a three from Firebaugh while Carlson also earned her first points of the night from deep to push Radford up 17-7.
 
A 9-0 run by the Highlanders would soon follow as Joi Williams, Carlson, Kirby Brown and Shipp-Davis would all contribute made shots. After Shipp-Davis secured one last make in the closing seconds of the half, it was Radford ahead 28-15.
 
Out of the break, Radford kept firing with a 7-0 run thanks to another three by Carlson and two makes from Dandridge and Napper ballooning the lead to 35-15. The Highlanders defense kept working, forcing multiple turnovers that turned into points. Angelina Nice was at the center of that, scoring four points and a pair of steals in the third quarter.
 
Up 45-26 with 10 minutes to play, Williams and Carlson would lead the scoring with a pair of made shots with an and-one from Carlson. Firebaugh would also secure an and-one down the stretch while the Highlanders continued to take care of business all the way to the 63-39 final.
 
AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • High Point maintained their conference lead with a strong 68-52 win at Charleston Southern.
  • Winthrop held on despite a late push by Presbyterian to win 60-55.
  • Longwood remains tied for second with Radford after a 75-46 win at Gardner-Webb.
 
UP NEXT
Radford's next Big South battle is sure to be jam-packed with action as the Highlanders host multiple events inside Dedmon this weekend. On Saturday, February 22nd, Radford will host Senior Day, their annual Play4Kay game and alumni weekend when they play Presbyterian for a 2 p.m. tip. Senior day is set to be celebrated prior to tip off, with an alumni recognition at halftime.
