Lacrosse Starts Hot, Falls at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Radford women's lacrosse program started hot before ultimately falling at a tough Mercer squad Saturday afternoon 20-7.

The Highlanders began Saturday's match with an electric start to quickly put the hosts Bears behind. After Ava LaManna recorded a save on the Bears first shot, the Highlanders raced down the field and opened the scoring thanks to Evie Gee.
LaManna would pick up another save allowing Radford to regain possession. This time it was Madison Driscoll who put Radford ahead 2-0. Capping the big run by the Highlanders was Emily Strother who scored her first career goal.
Radford's defense would stand strong throughout most of the first quarter as Mercer would only net a pair of goals. Up 3-2 after a quarter, Radford fell victim to an 8-0 run by Mercer that went the length of the second quarter allowing the hosts to lead 10-3 after one half.
The scoring run continued into the second half as Mercer built a 15-3 lead. Kaitlyn Lytton would end the run by the Bears with a free position goal that cut the lead. Gee would also score her second goal of the match before the third quarter came to a close.
The Highlanders' final two goals of the afternoon would come in the final quarter. With 10:15 to go, Driscoll netted her second goal of the game assisted by Piper Galbraith. In the closing minutes, Molly O'Brien would add her name to the scoring sheet for the final goal of the 20-7 final.

The Highlanders will return home for their next bout of Big South action. On Wednesday, April 9th, Radford hosts in-state foe Longwood with a 3 p.m. start on ESPN+.
