RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program used a second half rally Sunday afternoon to cruise to a 4-1 win over a tough Shepherd squad.
KEY STATS
PLAY BY PLAY
Saturday's match got off to an even start between the two squads as scoring opportunities didn't come easy through the opening minutes. Olson would take care of things herself for the first score of the day. 10 minutes in, the Roanoke, Va., native drove all the way through enemy territory by herself to get a one-on-one opportunity. Olson floated it perfectly into the back left corner of the net to give Radford the 1-0 lead.
Through the next 12 minutes, neither team would get a shot attempt until Shepherd got a free kick opportunity not far from Radford's goal. The cross came in and looked good but unfortunately deflected off a Highlander and into the net for an own goal to tie the game.
Katie Purnell and Hunter Rosenberg got some shot opportunities in the back half of the first half, but the game remained tied. After a quiet start to the second half that only saw a few of Radford's first corners of the day, the Highlanders got the deciding goal thanks to the freshman Oliver in the 58th minute.
Thanks to a good pass to the top of the box from Short, Oliver split through two Rams defenders to open a scoring opportunity. Oliver struck well with the shot slightly deflected off the crossbar but down into the net to give Radford the 2-1 advantage and her first career score.
Through the next 25 minutes, Radford's defense allowed no shots on goal to preserve the lead. In the 87th minute, Olson would open another scoring shot for Radford but was tackled in the box drawing a penalty kick attempt for Radford. Green would get the nod for the shot attempt and was perfect on the strike for her first career goal to push the lead further to 3-1.
Just one minute later, Radford struck once again thanks to Olson who recorded Radford's first multi-goal game of the season and her career. Now up 4-1, Radford was able to cruise the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"The first half was a pretty even game and the score showed it," commented Head Coach Ben Sohrabi. "Our players dug deep in the second half and created a ton of chances. A lot of credit to Shepherd who is a really solid program. Their tactics made us have to make some adjustments that we don't normally see, which our team did a great job with."
UP NEXT
Radford will return to the Queen City for the second time this season when they visit Davidson on Thursday, September 4th. Action will stream on ESPN+ kicking off at 7 p.m.
