Rough Second Half Downs Highlanders at Buccaneers

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford women's soccer program fell after a tough second half Thursday night in a 4-1 final at ETSU.

KEY STATS
  • Caitlyn Nottingham's goal was her first of the season and second in her career.
  • Hailey Crellin's late goal was the first in her young Radford career.
  • ETSU's shots were accurate on the night, with 8 of their 13 shots coming on goal.
  • The Highlanders didn't draw an offsides flag once in the match.

PLAY BY PLAY
A quiet first half would prove misleading before both teams came alive offensively in the second half. Through the first 45 minutes, neither team would record a shot. Both teams were even in corners as well, at two apiece, but neither offense was able to strike as defenses stood strong.

In the second half, the tone of the game was flipped on its head. In the 53rd minute, the Buccaneers found not just their first, but their second goal of the night separated by less than a minute.

Now down 2-0, Radford struck back quickly as they've shown the ability to do so far this season. In the 55th minute, Nottingham cut the deficit in half with her first goal of the season. The Buccaneers attack didn't relent, though, and would continue to score netting goals in the 60th and 61st minute to go ahead 4-1.

From there, the Highlanders would score once more but too late for a rally to spark. In the 88th minute, the freshman Crellin struck for her first collegiate goal to make it a 4-2 game. Over the final minutes, that score would stand for the 4-2 finish.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I thought we played well the first half, but in the second half we had a short period where we lost focus, committed some key turnovers, and missed our assignments defensively," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "A lot of credit to ETSU. They are fit and press hard for 90. We have to regroup and get ready for conference now. ."

UP NEXT
Radford has completed the nonconference portion of their schedule and will not begin preparing for their Big South schedule. After a week off, Radford gets back into action on the road at Presbyterian on Saturday, September 20th.
