Highlanders Shutout Lancers in Rainy Victory

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program recorded their second straight Big South win and shutout over Longwood Wednesday night, battling the rain in a 1-0 final.

KEY STATS
  • Lilly Short represented the lone goal on the night, her third this season and first in conference play.
  • Magda Carpenter and Ryane Devlin both recorded their first assists in Highlander uniforms.
  • Of the 27 shots taken on the night by both teams, just seven came on target.
  • Lexi Radvanyi posted her second straight conference shutout with four saves.

PLAY BY PLAY
In a dry first half, both teams were deadlocked in a 0-0 tie despite multiple good looks on goal. The Highlanders' defense thwarted multiple scoring opportunities by the Lancers in the opening 30 minutes. Short, who had multiple great looks including one ring off the post, would push through for the Highlanders.

In the 35th minute, the Highlanders worked quickly off a throw in from Devlin. Carpetner crossed a ball into the box that trickled to the foot of Short who cleaned it up for the 1-0 Radford lead. The advantage held through half time, setting up for a messy back half.

Right before half time ended, the clouds opened up as a torrential downpour began to effect the match. Slippery play ensured, but Radford's defense held strong the full way. The Lancers got off three corners seven shots over the final 45, but none found the back of the net thanks to strong work from Jillian Silverstone, Amani Green, Caitlyn Nottingham, Hailey Crellin and Radvanyi.

Break aways on the offensive end helped bleed the clock late, allowing the clock to go zeroes with Radford up 1-0. The shutout victory was the second straight for Radford after posting a clean sheet last weekend at Presbyterian.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"That was a classic Big South and Longwood vs. Radford match," commented head coach Ben Sohrabi. "I'm proud of our girls for getting the goal we needed in the first and creating plenty of scoring chances throughout the game. I'm also really proud of our defense for buckling down and figuring out how to get a shutout. We did a good job of winning multiple 50/50 balls. It's great to start 2-0, and we're really looking forward to the next game."

UP NEXT
