Walsh’s Late Shot Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Morehead State

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer program used a second half rally and got the game-winner from freshman Abby Walsh to defeat Morehead State 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

  • Walsh's game winner is the first in her young career, and her second goal this season.
  • Radford's offense was relentless in the match, finishing with 19 shots and nine coming on goal. On the defensive end, Morehead State had just five shots.
  • Radford did not concede a corner kick, while drawing 11 of their own.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford was able to bring plenty of pressure early against Morehead State, who is coming off a 2024 NCAA Tournament appearance last season. In the first couple minutes, Radford drew five corner kicks and made five shots. Just one of those shots came on goal, however, as the Highlanders relentless attack couldn't break through.

Morehead State wouldn't get their first shot until the 22nd minute, and neither of their two shots came on goal. Through 45 minutes, Radford didn't find the back of the net as the match remained tied at 0-0.

The scoreless tie would break early in the second half, as the Eagles took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity deep in Radford territory. In their best look all afternoon, the Eagles didn't miss their opportunity and took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.

The Highlanders wouldn't wait long in their response, as the equalizer came just one minute later. Olson, taking a pass from Lilly Short, kept her recent hot streak going with a strike from the top of the box that the Eagles' goalkeeper wasn't able to stop.

Tied at 1-1, Radford's offense didn't relent. Maintaining a majority of possession and keeping pressure on, the Highlanders would break through again in the 73rd minute. Following some quick passes from Ary Oliver and Caitlyn Nottingham, the freshman Walsh stepped up big for Radford. Her strike from outside the box sailed past the stretching goalie to give Radford a 2-1 advantage.

From there, the Highlanders offense buckled down and didn't allow any opportunities for the Eagles. Recording no shots or set pieces in Radford territory, Morehead State wouldn't find the equalizer as Radford held on to defend Cupp Stadium 2-1.

SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"Morehead State is a good team that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season," commented Head Coach Ben Sohrabi. "Whenever you can beat a team that competed in the tournament is a good win. We did a good job solving their low block and creating chances. A lot of credit to their goalkeeper who made a lot of great stops. It took two really great goals from us to get the win today."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will go on the road to close out the nonconference portion of their schedule next week at ETSU. On Thursday, September 11th, Radford and ETSU will kick off for a 7 p.m. start in Johnson City, Tenn.
