RICHMOND, Ky. – The Radford women's basketball team led at half but failed to finish the deal, falling to Eastern Kentucky, 65-56, on Saturday afternoon at Baptist Health Arena.
KEY STATS
The Colonels and Highlanders seemed evenly matched through the early going. EKU scored the first two buckets before Cate Carlson hit from deep and Cherish Haywood stole a pass at the top of the arc and drove coast-to-coast for the lead. Ueda got going for the Colonels, going on a personal 6-0 run that pulled the hosts up 15-9 with 3:30 left in the first. Anaiah Jenkins managed to clean up a miss and score the following trip, then Logan Luebbers Palmer finished off a fast break to get it back to a one-point game. EKU had and converted a three-point play in the closing seconds to lead 18-16 after one.
The Highlander defense stepped up in the second quarter, forcing nine turnovers over the 10 minutes to battle their way back on top. She forced a turnover and found Nice on the fast break to tie it up with 5:53 left before half. She then hit a transition three-pointer on the following trip to make it a three-point game. Jenkins sank a pair of free throws to extend the lead to six with 2:32 left in the second. The Colonels managed to end a nearly five-minute scoring drought through the middle of the quarter, but the momentum and lead at half were in Radford's hands, 30-26.
Radford struggled and never got it going in the third quarter. Nice accounted for four of the team's 11 points from the free throw line, but the team made just two baskets (2-13) in the chapter. EKU tied it up with seven minutes left and pulled out an eight-point advantage going to the fourth, 49-41.
The shots began falling for Radford in the fourth quarter but they could not fully dig their way out of the deficit. Simonsen took the charge, scoring a three-point play and drove in the paint and finished to make it a four-point game with 6:47 left. EKU had back-to-back answers to get the lead back to nine points. Fields and Simonsen again cut the deficit to four points with 2:56 left, a basket, stop, and another make pulled EKU back up by eight with under two minutes left. The Colonels made enough of their free throws late to finish off the Highlanders for the 65-56 final.
FROM COACH MCGUIRE
"Eastern Kentucky is a good team with talented players and are well coached," Head Coach Mike McGuire said postgame. "I thought we played well in stretches but need to learn how to value possessions more and respond when a team makes a run against us. We have to respond better collectively in those moments."
