Softball Falters Late Against RedHawks, Hangs Close With Hawkeyes in Day Two of Campbell Invitational

BUIES CREEK, N.C. –The Radford softball program was in a pair of tight battles through Saturday's action at the Campbell Invitational before falling to Miami (OH) 10-2 and Iowa 4-0.

GAME ONE
Looking to bounce back, Radford's pitching staff did just that to start the Highlanders' first game of the day against the Redhawks. Dakota Redmon worked around a single for a clean first and a walk in a quiet second. After another scoreless frame in the third, the Highlanders bats came alive.

The big hit came from Hailey Scott, who hit her first home run at the Division I level, to give Radford the 1-0 lead. Redmon responded in kind with a 1-2-3 inning including two strikeouts. Kelley Feigen began the bottom of the fourth with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Amber Wolfe. Grace Bechtol grabbed the RBI with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 Radford.

After two walks, Miami (OH) struck for their first run with a double forcing a pitching change bringing Madison Sabo in. Sabo locked the inning down, forcing two groundouts to keep the 2-1 lead intact. After a quiet bottom half, the Redhawks tied the game in the sixth with a two-out double and single.

With nothing coming out of the bottom of the sixth, the game fully slipped away from Radford in the seventh. Miami (OH) scored eight runs taking advantage of multiples walks, errors and miscues to blow the game open at 10-2. Radford had no answer in the seventh, and fell in the 10-2 final.

GAME TWO
Despite Peyton Simmons leading off with an infield single to start game two against the Hawkeyes, the Highlanders were held scoreless, eventually leading Iowa taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-out double.

Morgan Cooper bounced back with a 1-2-3 second inning, but Iowa added another run with two outs in the third to go up 2-0. The Hawkeyes led off the fourth with a home run, going up 3-0. Another solo blast in the fourth gave Iowa the final run of the game making it 4-0.

The Highlanders would get a rally going in the seventh near the bottom of the lineup. Scott singled and Abby Bossler followed her with a single to put a pair on. Iowa made a pitching change and it snuffed out the rally for Radford, with the squad from the Big Ten recording the next two outs to end the game 4-0.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will look to finish the weekend on a high note tomorrow in the weekend finale against Campbell. Action is set to begin at 11:30 a.m., following the prior game (Iowa vs. Miami OH) set for 10:00 a.m.
