Hot Start Not Enough as Softball Upended at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford softball program got off to a great start in their final day at the Campbell Invitational Sunday, but pitching woes continued as the team fell to Campell 13-5 in six innings.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford's offense got off to a hot start in Sunday's game stringing together multiple hits for a sizeable lead. Peyton Simmons singled, Amanda Lee singled and Malli Groves singled to load the bases. The first run came in after Amber Wolfe reached thanks to an error while Kelley Feigen drove in another run with a single up the middle. A wild pitch would send Groves home giving Radford the 3-0 lead in the opening inning.

The Camels didn't wait long for their response as they loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Campbell scored four runs to take a 4-3 lead. After a quiet second, Campbell scored four more in the third to double their run production in the game.

Radford's offense started to spark a comeback in the fifth to narrow the deficit. Wolfe and Feigen drew walks and both stole bases to move into scoring position. Wolfe would come home and then Feigen as Grace Hogie picked up an RBI triple.

Now down just 8-5, Campbell kept firing on the offensive end to fully pull away. The hosts scored five runs in the final two innings with all but one of those runs coming with two outs or were unearned. In the end, Campbell pulled out with the shortened 13-5 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will regroup and look to right the ship when they return to action in their home state next weekend at the Liberty Invitational. Competition remains top notch as the Highlanders kick off their weekend with a doubleheader against the hosts Liberty on Friday with first pitch at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
