Pitching Excels and Groves Keeps Slugging as Highlanders Split and Pick Up Win over UConn

LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program continued their strong pitching this weekend with a pair of big outings from Madison Sabo and Dakota Redmon as well as Malli Groves' big offensive push to earn a split of Saturday's action at the Liberty Invitational. Radford first fell to Marshall, 2-1, before defeating UConn 5-2.

GAME ONE
It was another phenomenal pitching showing for Radford to start the day as Madison Sabo had her best start of the season. Radford's offense struck right away in the first as Peyton Simmons began her strong game with an infield single. After moving all the way to third on wild pitches, Amber Wolfe drove Simmons home with an RBI double.

Sabo retired the side in the first and second innings. Radford's offense threatened again in the second as Grace Hogie and Grace Bechtol both singled, but the team came up empty. Another runner was left in scoring position in third after a two out double by Wolfe but Sabo kept cruising to keep it 1-0 after three.

Two more reached in the fourth for Radford but the team came up empty in a worrying trend. While Marshall got its first hit in the bottom half, Sabo quickly wiped it with a double play. After a quiet fifth, the Herd finally broke through in the sixth.

After back-to-back bunt hits put two on to start the inning, a ground out moved the deciding run to second. Sabo did a good job limiting the damage as Marshall was only able to bring in one run off an infield hit to keep the game tied.

Hailey Scott led the seventh off with a double looking to ignite the offense. Radford wasn't able to cash in, however, and that proved pivotal as Marshall led off their own half of the inning with a double. After a passed ball, a ground ball through the right side ended the game in Marshall's favor as Radford lost their second straight game to a walk off 2-1.

GAME TWO
Redmon followed Sabo's suit and locked in another great showing against UConn to help the Highlanders pick up the eventual win. After a scoreless first, Redmon worked around two runners in the second getting back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a 0-0 game. In the third after retiring the first two batters the Huskies got their first and only runs of the night via a two-run homer.

The Highlanders would immediately respond in the bottom of the third. Lee began the frame with an infield single and Simmons made it two runners on with an infield single of her own. Hogie kept the hit train rolling with another infield hit that would send Lee in for a run. With two outs, Groves delivered her biggest hit of the weekend so far with a home run to center to vault Radford back ahead 4-2.

Now with a lead, Redmon went back to work and retired three straight in the fourth and fifth innings. The freshman Groves would step up big again in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. With Hogie on first, Groves tripled to give Radford a valuable insurance run.

UConn got a hit to break up the retirement streak by Redmon to start the sixth, but the sophomore retired three straight from there to keep it a 4-2 game. In the seventh the Huskies had no answers on the offensive end as Redmon was able to quickly put a bow on the 5-2 victory for the Highlanders.
