Bats Explode as Highlanders Sweep Weekend Series Against Blue Hose

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders offense was nearly unstoppable Saturday afternoon as the team combined for 22 runs in two wins to secure the series sweep over Presbyterian.

GAME ONE
Radford was dominant on both ends in the first game with the offense scoring their most runs in a single game this season (for now) while Morgan Cooper dealt in the circle. In the first, the Blue Hose got a bloop hit in the first but that was all as Cooper earned a strikeout in a scoreless start.

The runs came right away in the bottom of the first as Peyton Simmons got her big day going with an infield hit. After another hit by Amanda Lee, Dakota Redmon singled home two runners for the 2-0 lead.

Cooper earned another strikeout in the second before the offense tacked on another run. Grace Bechtol and Simmons singled again to put two runners on. With two outs, Lee came through with a single to center that scored Simmons to push the lead to 3-0.

Cooper kept cruising from there, retiring the side in the third and fourth innings. Radford added another run, once again with two outs, in the bottom of the fourth. Bechtol doubled and after Simmons picked up her third hit of the day, Bechtol snuck home with some heads up baserunning.

With Radford now up 4-0, Presbyterian would score their first runs of the weekend in the fifth. An error proved big as the Blue Hose hit back-to-back doubles to score two runs and tighten the game at 4-2. Cooper would work through the trouble, retiring two straight to end the inning and keep the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the flood gates opened for the Highlanders. Amber Wolfe and Redmon both singled to begin the inning and an error in left allowed a run to cross. After a walk by Bossler forced a pitching change, Radford kept hacking as Malli Groves doubled in two runs. Kelley Feigen and Bechtol both walked to load the bases setting the stage for the run-rule walk off.

Simmons earned her fourth hit, becoming the first Highlander with a four-hit day in two seasons, and drove in a run making it 8-2 Radford. The order turned over as Wolfe came back up to hit for the second time in the inning and she ended the game with a single to center that scored two in the 10-2 final.

GAME TWO
Radford would one-up their previous game's scoring high of runs as the offense didn't miss a beat scoring 12 more runs in game two. Offensive production was needed, as both squads broke out in a big way.

Presbyterian got things rolling right away with two runs in the opening lead to take their first lead of the weekend. Radford didn't wait long on the response, though, as Lee and Redmon drew walks leading to a big three-run blast by Groves to vault Radford back up 3-2.

In the circle, Redmon settled things down with two strikeouts in a clean second and another pair of strikeouts in a clean third. In the bottom of the third, Radford's offense got back to work. After Lee reached thanks to an error, she swiped second and Wolfe got on base thanks to another error. Redmon singled, which loaded the bases for Radford.

Bossler would break things open with a double deflected by the shortstop which scored a pair of runs. After Myla Russell came home on a wild pitch, Grace Hogie singled home another run to make it a 7-2 lead by the Highlanders.

Presbyterian fought right back, though, as walks mounted up and the Blue Hose took advantage plating four runs to tighten the game back at 7-6. In the bottom of the fourth, the Highlanders brought back the breathing room thanks to a pair of big homers. With two outs, Redmon helped her own cause with a two-run homer and Groves followed her with her second homer of the day to open the lead back up to 11-6.

In the fifth, Redmon was back to form in the circle retiring three straight and working around a double in the sixth to keep the lead intact. The Highlanders would squeeze across a big insurance run in the bottom half of the frame as Redmon doubled home Simmons.

With a 12-6 lead entering the final inning, Presbyterian wouldn't go away quietly. The Blue Hose struck another home run forcing Radford to make a pitching change and bring in Madison Sabo. Sabo would allow one run via another homer, but otherwise the senior locked the game down recording the last three outs to seal the 12-9 win and series sweep.
