Cooper Deals and Offense Piles on as Radford Sweeps Doubleheader at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford softball program swept their doubleheader at ETSU Tuesday afternoon with a 3-2 win in extras in game one and a shortened 10-1 victory in game two. Morgan Cooper navigated through multiple baserunners to keep the Highlanders alive in game one while the offense broke out in game two behind six runs driven in by Dakota Redmon.

GAME ONE
As was the theme in the first game of the day, the Highlanders immediately packed the basepaths with runners. Peyton Simmons and Amanda Lee each singled, and Amber Wolfe drove home the first run of the day with a single of her own. Hailey Scott would also draw a bases loaded walk to give Radford a 2-0 lead before the inning closed.

ETSU responded quickly with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, but Cooper settled in and would preserve the 2-1 lead. Simmons and Lee would both single in the second, but the pair were left stranded. Groves also singled in the third, but the Highlanders came up empty keeping it a 3-1 game through three.

Layla Miles would pick up a two-out double pinch hitting in the fifth, but the score remained deadlocked until the Buccaneers struck to even the game. ETSU doubled and tripled to begin the bottom of the fifth and suddenly the script was flipped on the Highlanders. Cooper didn't waver, however, retiring three straight with a runner on third to keep the game tied.

Grace Hogie and Klara Van Beuge, both pinch hitting, gave Radford a great opportunity to start the sixth. Hogie walked and Van Beuge singled with none out. ETSU escaped the threat, though, retiring three straight. Cooper was dominant in the bottom of the sixth to send the game to the seventh still tied at two-all.

Redmon gave Radford an immediate chance in the seventh with a double to lead things off. Emma Salzman replaced her on the bases but outside of a single from Abby Bossler, Radford wasn't able to bring her home. The Buccaneers would put two runners in scoring position with just one out in the bottom half, but Cooper twirled out of the jam with ease retiring two straight to send the game to extras.

Hogie was placed at second to begin the inning and after being bunted to third by Grace Bechtol it was Simmons who finally broke through for Radford with an RBI single for the 3-2 lead. ETSU had a similar chance with a runner placed on second to start their half of the eighth, but Cooper was excellent once again retiring three straight to hand Radford the 3-2 win in extras.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders would match their previous game's run total behind one swing from Redmon as she laced a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. That gave starting pitcher Madison Sabo all the run support she would need as she was excellent through five shutout innings.

While Sabo dealed facing little to no resistance, Radford's offense would hold the lead at 3-0 until adding another pair of runs in the fifth. Simmons and Lee, a dynamic duo throughout the game, began the frame with back-to-back singles. Redmon would drive in two more runs with a hard hit to short that pushed the lead to 5-0.

After Sabo navigated through a pair of runners in the fifth, the offense fully opened the game up in the sixth. Bossler singled, Scott walked and Miles drew a bunt single to load the bases. Pinch hitting, Isabel Harrison drove in a run with a single to center. Lee would drive in another two runs with a single as Wolfe added a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0.

The final run came in off an error to give Radford 10 runs, their third game in the last four times out with 10+ runs. Abby Peace would enter in relief in the bottom half to help Radford earn the shortened win. The Buccaneers crossed one run, but Peace limited any more damage to finalize the 10-1 win.
