THREE RADFORD MEN’S GOLFERS SET TO COMPETE IN VSGA AMATEUR

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Former Radford standouts Michael Wade (Floyd, Va. / Floyd County) and Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan), along with Highlander senior Weston Eklund (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle), will represent RU at the 99th edition of the VSGA Amateur.

The prestigious tournament is making its second visit to the par-72, 7,138-yard Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach, Va. The Tom Fazio-designed layout hosted its first USGA championship last year, serving as the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship site. In addition to a USGA championship, Bayville has served as the host site for three VSGA championships and the 2004 Women's Eastern Golf Association Amateur.

A practice round is scheduled for competitors today. The qualifying field of 120 players will play two rounds of stroke play (Tuesday-Wednesday, June 26-27), with the low 32 individuals advancing to match play (Thursday-Saturday, June 28-30). The 36-hole final for the right to hoist the Schwarzschild Brothers Trophy begins at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Wade and Eklund advanced out of the Water's Edge Country Club and Springfield Golf and Country Club qualifiers, respectively, with both earning spots in the VSGA Amateur and the SunTrust State Open. Eklund carded a 1-under 141 to claim medalist honors at Springfield. Woodson also qualified out of Springfield by firing a 7-over 149.

Wade leads off the Radford contingent at 8:40 a.m. on the 10th hole. He will be playing alongside defending SunTrust State Open Champion and 2008 VSGA Amateur runner-up Roger Newsom. Jimmy Delp rounds out the three-man pairing.

Eklund is matched up with fellow collegians Bryce Chalkley (Virginia Tech) and John Dawson (Old Dominion). They will also begin on the back nine with a 12:50 p.m. tee time.

Woodson gets his round going at 2 p.m. off the first hole. The Powhatan native is paired with Dan Hosek and Marshall Tinsley.
