Men's Basketball Welcomes In-State Foe Bridgewater to Peters Hall Tuesday

RADFORD, Va. – Coming off a season-opening win Friday night, Radford will host Bridgewater College in a non-conference men's basketball tilt at Peters Hall on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.

The Highlanders (1-0) tipped off the 2008-09 campaign with a 74-55 win over Brevard College, taking advantage of double figure scoring efforts from all five starters.

Leading the way was senior Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs), whose 20-point effort was marked by a 7-for-13 shooting performance, including a 5-of-7 evening from beyond three-point range. Thomas extended Radford's lead to 34 points early in the second half, when he was fouled on a made three-pointer at the top of the key and followed up by knocking down the ensuing free throw.

Senior Martell McDuffy (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) contributed 13 points, while junior preseason all-conference selection Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and junior Artsiom Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) each added 11, and junior Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) tallied 10 points and a career-high six steals. Lynch-Flohr led the Highlanders on the glass with eight rebounds.

The game was Radford's first in Peters Hall since a 74-71 overtime win on Feb. 24, 1981 over Liberty. Over a seven year stay at Peters between 1974 and 1981, the Highlanders were 69-18 (.793).

Tuesday's game marks the return of Radford 1,000-point club member Don Burgess, head coach at Bridgewater, to campus. Burgess, a former student assistant for the Highlanders, appeared previously on the Dedmon Center floor as an assistant at Coastal Carolina, VMI and High Point.

Burgess, who finished his Radford career with 1,452 points (sixth all-time), assumed the top spot for the Eagles in September following the retirement of 23-year head coach Bill Leatherman.

Bridgewater (1-1), picked sixth in the ODAC Preseason Poll, delivered Burgess his first career win on Sunday afternoon, a 79-71 victory over Greensboro College in the Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Classic in Harrisonburg. The Eagles dropped their season-opener 84-79 to Averett on Saturday night.

Radford leads the all-time series with Bridgewater, 6-2.

Once again, there will be no walk up sales due to the entire men's basketball slate at Peters Hall being sold out.
