Men's Basketball Heads to Virginia for First Road Tilt of 2008-09

RADFORD, Va. – Radford men's basketball steps outside the confines of Peters Hall for the first time this season on Friday night, traveling to Virginia for a 7 p.m. tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Highlanders (2-0) are coming off their second win of the season, an 86-46 triumph over Bridgewater College on Tuesday night. Junior Artsiom Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) led the way for Radford, scoring 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first period. The a 6-11 transfer made six of his nine attempts from the floor and connected on 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to lead three Highlanders in double figures.

Senior Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) and junior Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) also contributed double-digits for the second time in as many contests with 14 and 12, respectively.

As a team, Radford shot 48.3 percent from the field, including a 51.5 percent clip in the second half, while holding the Eagles to just 25.9 percent overall.

Radford opened its season last Friday night (Nov. 14) with a 74-55 win over Brevard College.

Through a pair of games, Thomas leads the way on the scoresheet, averaging 17.0 points per outing while hitting on 6-of-9 tries from beyond three-point range. Three other scorers are averaging in double figures, including Parakhouski (15.0), Lynch-Flohr (11.5) and senior Martell McDuffy (11.5). Lynch-Flohr also leads the way on the glass for Radford, pulling down 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Cavaliers (2-0) stayed undefeated on Wednesday night, as a bucket and made free throw in the final 13 seconds from Sylven Landesburg gave Virginia the go-ahead points in a 77-75 victory over South Florida at John Paul Jones Arena. Landesberg finished with 21 points for the Cavaliers (2-0), and Jamil Tucker added a career-high 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the win. Tucker also went 2-for-3 from behind the arc.

Virginia won its season opener against Big South foe VMI at home last Sunday, 107-97, igniting a 10-2 run with just over six minutes remaining to break an 82-82 tie and pull away from the Keydets.

Five Cavaliers are averaging double-figure points early on, led by Landenburg's 24.5 per outing. The 6-6 freshman guard has also knocked down 18-of-32 chances from the field thus far. Mike Scott is averaging a double-double through two games, with 18.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest.

Virginia leads the all-time series 4-0 over Radford, which is still in search of its first win against an ACC opponent. The previous meeting in the series was a 95-47 win by the Cavaliers at University Hall on Dec. 28, 1997. Friday's contest is also the first for the Highlanders at John Paul Jones Arena.
