ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In a game that featured 78 free throws and 61 fouls, Navy's Kaleo Kina scored a game-high 30 points, including 12-of-18 from the charity stripe as the Midshipmen held off Radford 73-71 in overtime Saturday evening at Alumni Hall.
Trailing 56-55 late in the second half, the Highlanders scored six straight, highlighted by a
Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) trey, to grab a 61-56 advantage with 2:20 remaining in regulation. Kina responded with a three-point play and three of his own to give the lead back to Navy, 63-61, with 42 ticks left, but Radford wasn't done as
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) answered with a hook shot 19 second later to send the game into an extra session.
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley), who scored all eight of the Highlanders' points in overtime, gave his club a 68-67 lead almost three minutes into overtime, but Kina put the Midshipmen in front for good with a pair of freebies and a three-pointer in consecutive trips.
Despite the loss, Johnson led four Radford players in double figures with a season-high 19 point on 7-of-13 shooting.
Martell McDuffy (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) playing in front of friends and family added 14, while Thomas and Lynch-Flohr contributed 12 and 11, respectively.
As a team, Radford finished the contest with a 43.4 shooting percentage and made 21-of-37 attempts from the free throw line. Navy shot just 35.5 percent from the floor and concluded its first-ever meeting with the Highlanders 25-of-41 from the stripe, including 21-of-35 in the second half and overtime combined. RU also held the Midshipmen to just 13.8 percent (4-29) from deep.
“Even though we were in foul trouble, I thought we did a very good job defensively,” said Coach Brad Greenberg. “We wanted to hold them under 40 percent from the field and keep them under 30 percent from the beyond the arc and we achieved both those goals.”
After Navy scored the first two buckets of the contest, Radford reeled off 11 straight points forcing the Midshipmen to burn a 30-second timeout. Out of the break, Navy slowly chipped away at the seven-point deficit and grabbed a 20-19 lead on a Jordan Sugars' layup.
A Thomas three-pointer with 2:47 remaining in the first half broke a 24-24 deadlock as Radford closed the opening period on a 7-3 spurt to lead at the half, 31-27.
Although the Highlanders committed 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action, they shot 52.6 percent (10-19), while holding Navy to a 32.4 percent clip, including 1-of-14 from long range.
Led by
Artsiom Parakhouski (Minsk, Belraus) and Lynch-Flohr, who had seven rebounds each, Radford edged the Midshipmen on the glass, 46-41. Navy forced 23 miscues turning them into 20 points.
The Highlanders will begin their longest homestand of the 2008-09 slate when they entertain Gardner-Webb in both teams conference opener Dec. 6 in a 7 p.m. tip at Peters Hall.
