Track and Field Adds McGranahan, Johnson as Assistant Coaches

RADFORD, Va.Ann McGranahan and Willie Johnson join Radford University's track and field program as assistant coaches, as announced Tuesday by Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg and head coach Brent Chumbley.

McGranahan will direct the men's and women's cross country teams and serve as track and field distance coach for Radford, while Johnson will be the jumps coach for track and field.

For the past five years, McGranahan has been a volunteer assistant with the Virginia Tech cross country and track and field teams. She helped guide the programs alongside her husband, Ben Thomas, the head cross country coach and distance track and field coach for the Hokies.

A native of Pensacola, Fla., McGranahan ran collegiately at Villanova University and was part of the school's 1998 NCAA champion cross country team. Her cross country career included Mid-Atlantic Regional and Big East cross country championships during her senior year in 2000. As a track and field athlete, McGranahan was a two-time Big East 10,000 meter champion.

McGranahan graduated from Villanova in 2001.

Johnson joins the Radford staff after two years as a graduate assistant/jumps coach for the Marshall University women's team, where he guided two All-Conference USA performers and three school record holders. In May, Johnson earned his Master's Degree in athletic administration from Marshall.

The Orlando, Fla. native excelled as a collegiate triple jumper at both Florida A&M University and Florida State University. As a Seminole, Johnson was a two-time NCAA All-American (2003-04), and earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference accolades three times in the outdoor triple jump (2003-05) and once in the indoor triple jump (2004). At FAMU, he was an All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honoree in the indoor and outdoor triple jump (2002).

Johnson earned a B.S. in physical education at FSU in 2005.
