LYNCHBURG, Va. – Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) and
Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) each recorded double-doubles to lead five Radford players in double figures as the Highlanders ended Liberty's 11-game home winning streak with a 94-82 victory in double overtime Saturday evening at the Vines Center.
“This game was about being resilient and persistent,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “We battled an excellent team for 50 minutes and showed the mental toughness, defensive focus and teamwork we strive for and I couldn't be more proud of this group.”
Tied 78-78 after the first extra session, Radford (10-10, 7-2 Big South) opened the second overtime with seven straight points and never looked back outscoring the Flames 16-4 in the stanza.
To go along with his league-leading 10th double-double (22 points, 16 rebounds) of the season, Parakhouski led Radford on the defensive end of the floor with six blocks in 50 minutes of action. Thomas recorded 21 points and a personal best 12 rebounds to finish the night with his first career double-double.
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley), who also went the distance, added 16 points, including 4-of-8 from deep, while
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and
Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Norview) scored 13 and 10, respectively for the Highlanders.

After
Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) put Radford up 43-36 with just his second long range jumper of the season, Liberty went on an 18-6 flurry highlighted by four buckets from downtown to grab its first lead since the 14:42 mark of the first half. As they did in the in the first 20 minutes, the Highlanders answered the streak and went back in front, 63-62 thanks to a Thomas layup with just under five minutes to play.
With 34 ticks remaining in regulation, Brolin Floyd hit one of his two attempts from the line to put the Flames up, 70-68, but a Parakhouski put back with 15 seconds left sent the Highlanders into their third overtime contest of the season. Radford had four chances in the last 11 seconds, but was unable to capitalize.
Seth Curry, who entered as the nation's top-scoring freshman, paced the Flames with 30 points, but connected on just 11-of-25 tries from the floor. Anthony Smith and Kyle Ohman also hit the 10-point plateau for Liberty with 18 each.
Thomas forced the second overtime by hitting a free throw with 12 seconds left in the first overtime.
The Highlanders drilled 53.8 percent of their field goal attempts after regulation to finish with a 47.4 percent clip, while holding Liberty to just 29-of-74 (39.2 percent). Both teams struggled at the charity stripe. Radford ended the contest 14-of-31, while the Flames were just 10-for-18.
Trailing 14-11 early in the contest, Johnson sparked a 14-3 run with his first of two three-pointers in the opening period to give the Highlanders a 28-18 advantage with just under seven minutes left in the half. Liberty (16-5, 5-4 Big South) responded with nine unanswered and cut the deficit to one, 28-27 on a Ohman trey, but Radford closed with another spurt to stretch the margin to 35-30 at the break.
Radford held a commanding 57-42 advantage on the glass and outscored the Flames in the paint, 48-22.
Tonight's triumph marks the first time in 10 years the Highlanders have strung together four consecutive road wins.
Halftime was extended approximately 20 minutes due to the arena lights failing.
Radford will enjoy a six-day break before continuing its three-game road trip with a 7 p.m. tip at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Jan. 31.
