Strong Second Half Leads Men’s Basketball to Fifth Straight Road Win, 76-57

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Along with drilling 64 percent of its attempts in the second half, Radford held Gardner-Webb to just seven field goals in the period to record its fifth straight road victory, 76-57, in Big South men's basketball action Saturday evening at Paul Porter Arena.

“Our defense in the second half was outstanding,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “To hold them to just 21.2 percent from the field, 33.9 percent for the game and limit them to just four three-point field goals is a credit to our defensive execution and focus.”

Trailing by two at the break, Radford opened the second half on a 15-2 run, highlighted by six straight points from Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) and four consecutive blocks from Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) to grab the lead for good. To go along with their streak, the Highlanders began the frame 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the floor and stretched the lead to as many as 21 (76-55) on a Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Norview) layup.

Thomas led four Highlanders in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including three jumpers from downtown. Parakhouski finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, while McEachin added a season-high 15 points off the bench, and Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored 12 and had eight boards.

“Chris gave us a great boost off the bench, and I thought Art and Joey were extremely efficient both on the offensive end and on the backboards," commented Greenberg.  "Kenny had another strong game leading us in scoring and while Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) struggled with his shot, he showed good court leadership.”

Each of the Highlanders' triumphs this season have come by double figures, moving to 11-10 overall and 8-2 in the league, while Gardner-Webb fell to 10-11 and 6-5.

Radford's current five-game road winning streak is its longest since the 1998-99 campaign.

Gardner-Webb hit its first six shots, including nine points from C.J. Hailey, to take an early 14-8 lead. The Highlanders slowly chipped away at the deficit and took a 29-28 advantage on Parakhouski's three-point play with 45 seconds remaining in the opening period. Aaron Linn answered the next trip down the floor with his second trey of the game to send the Bulldogs into the half ahead 31-29.

Linn and Auryn MacMillan were the only Bulldogs to hit the 10-point plateau, scoring 14 and 11 respectively.

Both clubs finished with 14 offensive rebounds, but Radford controlled the overall total, 43-33. To go along with their work on the glass, 48 of the Highlanders' points came from inside the paint.

Radford will conclude its third of four three-game road trips this season with a 7 p.m. tilt at Winthrop Monday evening.
