Balanced Scoring and Strong Defense Leads Radford to 68-52 Win at Coastal

CONWAY, S.C. – The frontcourt duo of Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va. /Fairfax) and Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) combined to score 32 points and Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va. / Norview) added a season-high 14 off the bench to lead Radford to a 68-52 victory over Coastal Carolina in Big South men's basketball action Monday evening at Kimbel Arena.

Paired with Saturday's win at Presbyterian, it marks the first time since 2006 the Highlanders have strung together road wins. The last time Radford recorded back-to-back triumphs away from home was against Coastal Carolina (1/21/06) and Charleston Southern (1/23/06).

“It was a great team win, highlighted by 40 minutes of individual and team defense,” commented Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “Our guys are starting to focus better and better on scouting reports and that's an important step towards becoming a good defensive team.”

Lynch-Flohr led the Highlanders with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Parakhouski recorded his fourth straight and league-leading eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. All of McEachin's scoring came in the second half, including a 8-of-11 showing from the stripe.

“Joey and Art established an inside presence at the offensive end and we got a great lift off the bench from Chris McEachin,” said Coach Greenberg.

As a team, Radford (6-9, 3-1 BSC) held the Chanticleers to just 29.7 percent (11-37) shooting in the second half and a final clip of 32.8 percent (22-67). To go along with their 44.7 percent (21-47) total from the floor, the Highlanders hit 22 of their 28 tries from the line.

After trading buckets and battling back-and-forth to find themselves tied, 18-18, Radford separated itself with an 8-2 run capped by a pair of Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va. / Highland Springs) free throws to grab a 26-20 lead with 3:18 left in the opening period. Joseph Harris, this week's Big South Co-Player of the Week, kept the Chanticleers in the contest with 16 first-half points, including his club's last 10 to cut the deficit to 28-24 at the break.

Both teams hit 11 field goals, including a pair of buckets from downtown in the first 20 minutes of action.

Following a Mario Sisinni trey that made it a two-point contest (33-31) early into the second half, the Highlanders quickly stretched the margin to double figures, 42-31 with nine unanswered, forcing a Coastal 30-second timeout.

Soon after Radford extended its lead to 50-37, the Chanticleers responded with a 10-3 run to close within six, 53-47, but that's as close as they would get as the Highlanders reeled off seven straight highlighted by a Parakhouski jam to put the game out of reach.

Harris and Sisinni were the only Coastal Carolina (7-8, 1-2 BSC) players in double figures scoring 25 and 11, respectively. Harris missed just two of his 13 attempts from the field, while the rest of the Chanticleers combined to go 11-for-54 (20.3 percent).

Kenny Thomas was outstanding holding their best three-point shooter to 1-for-11 and Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Quaker Valley) was strong as well defending their point guard into a 4-for-14 night,” said Greenberg.

The Highlanders finished with a 41-35 advantage on the glass.

“The South Carolina trips are always tough, and for us to come away with a pair of wins is big,” said Lynch-Flohr.

Radford returns home for a pair of Big South contests beginning with a 7 p.m. tip against UNC Asheville Saturday evening at Peters Hall.
