Women's Soccer Puts a Lid on Home Schedule This Weekend, Honors Seniors

RADFORD – The 2009 home women's soccer schedule comes to an end for Radford this weekend, when the Highlanders host Winthrop on Friday (7 p.m.) and Gardner-Webb on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Cupp Stadium.

Sunday's home finale also marks senior day for five Radford seniors: Jill Boyer, Jackie Cozza, Justine Dugger, Amanda Heins and Caitlyn Roan.

Radford (6-7-0) returns home off a 1-1 swing along the South Carolina coast last week, and with a 3-1 Big South record before closing out the 2009 regular season with three straight away from Cupp Stadium.

Sparking the success of the defending champions' recent run has been the play of freshman forward Mary Wiley and sophomore goalkeeper Lisa Lubke.

Wiley enters the weekend as the team's scoring leader, following a two-goal performance in Radford's 2-1 overtime win over Charleston Southern last Saturday. Her first of the game helped Radford from an early 1-0 deficit when she chipped an 18-yard shot off a pass from Cozza in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1.  The match went scoreless for the next 75 minutes before Wiley netted the game-winner in overtime, as her 97th-minute goal off a pass from Heins propelled the Highlanders to the win.

Wiley's dramatics last weekend gave her three goals in Big South play, and five in the last nine games.

Lubke, who earned Big South player of the week honors after the first weekend of conference action, had 14 saves to help the Highlanders go 1-1 last weekend.  In conference games, the preseason player of the year is second in both goals-against average (0.49) and save percentage (90.9).

The Highlanders enter the weekend just one point behind first-place Liberty, and two ahead of third-place Charleston Southern.

Winthrop (3-7-2, 0-2-1 Big South) visits Radford on Friday looking for its first conference win of the season.  On Sunday, Radford will try and stay undefeated against Gardner-Webb (8-6-0, 2-1-0), when the Runnin' Bulldogs visit Cupp Stadium for the first time as a member of the Big South.   All-time, the Highlanders are 2-0-1 against Gardner-Webb.
