ROCK HILL, S.C. – Both teams had two first half goals, 37 minutes in, but went scoreless through two overtimes as Radford and Winthrop played to a 2-2 draw in Big South men's soccer on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders (3-6-2, 0-3-2 Big South) picked up their first league points since a scoreless draw at Liberty on Sept. 19. Winthrop entered the day's action in first place in the Big South standings.
Radford went ahead 2-0 in the first half, on goals from freshman
Brian Gwanzura (Harare, Zimbabwe/Harare) and junior
James Leith (Herndon, Va./Oakton). Freshman
Myles Jones (Redditch, England/Studley) assisted on both goals.
Miquel Casajuana had both Winthrop (8-2-2, 3-0-2) goals to equalize.
Gwanzura got the Highlanders on the board in the 18th minute when Jones dribbled to the left side of the field and served in a cross to the back post, where redshirt sophomore
Aldo Macias (Dumfries, Va./Edison) bumped the ball in front to Gwanzura, who drilled a six-yard shot for the tally and the 1-0 advantage.
Leith made it 2-0 in the 33rd on a ball served into the box from the left side of the field to Jones, whose header from 12 yards was saved, but the rebound went right to Leith for his second of the year.
The Eagles countered 31 seconds later on Casajuana's first of the game, a one-touch shot off Wylie Rea's service to make it 2-1, Radford.
Casajuana's second came in the 37th, on another one-touch shot off a pass from Matthew Skonicki, closing the scoring.
The Highlanders outshot Winthrop 4-1 in the overtime period, forcing three saves from Enrique Miranda, who finished with six stops for the Eagles.
Radford sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Taylor (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) stopped five shots.
The Highlanders continue Big South action on Wednesday night, hosting VMI at 7 p.m.
