RADFORD – After snapping its scoreless streak in convincing fashion with a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday, Radford looks to carry that momentum into a Big South men's soccer matchup with UNC Asheville on Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.
Saturday night's match kicks off at 7 p.m.
The Highlanders (3-5-1, 0-2-1 Big South) were held scoreless for 594 minutes and over a span of six games before they broke through with a trio of second half goals on their way to a win over the Hokies at home on Tuesday.
Freshman
James Jordan put Radford on the board for the first time in nearly a month with a rocket from 25 yards out into the opposite upper corner of the net in the 55th minute to knot the match at 1-1. Jordan, who leads the team with his two goals, had been slowed with injuries in Radford's last three games.
Junior
James Leith got a piece of a Virginia Tech defender's failed clear attempt in the 78th minute to give Radford the clincher and a 2-1 lead. For Leith, it was his first goal since a Big South Tournament win over Coastal Carolina on Nov. 16, 2007. Redshirt sophomore
Aldo Macias netted the first of his career off a pass from sophomore
Iyiola Awosika in the 84th, sealing an emotional win for the Highlanders. Awosika's helper was the first of his collegiate career.
Radford was also buoyed by the play of sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Taylor, who was forced to make four stops following Jordan's equalizer in the 55th. Taylor had to make a pair of saves in the final 10 minutes to help the Highlanders preserve the win.
The offensive showcase for Radford was just its second three-goal performance in the last two seasons, and the most since a 3-1 win over Presbyterian on Oct. 3, 2008.
Asheville (4-6-2, 0-1-1) and the Highlanders meet with Big South win No. 1 on the line. The Bulldogs visit Radford following a 2-2 tie with Presbyterian on Tuesday afternoon in Asheville.
In the last meeting between the two teams, Radford took a 2-0 lead to the break and Taylor made six saves in just his second career start, to lead the Highlanders to a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs 364 days prior to Saturday's matchup. Awosika netted his fifth goal of the season in his Big South rookie of the year campaign, giving Radford the game-winner.
Radford has a 21-7-1 series advantage on the Bulldogs, the program's most wins against any Big South opponent.
