McEachin’s Big Shots and Parakhouski’s Double-Double Lead Radford to Overtime Win

RADFORD, Va. – Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Norview) matched his career-high with 19 points and Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) finished with his 12th double-double of the season to lift Radford to a 71-67 overtime victory over Coastal Carolina Monday evening at the Dedmon Center.

The win was the Highlanders' third in overtime this season as they improve to 14-10 overall and 11-2 in league play with their fifth straight triumph.

Trailing 58-55, Radford's Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) nailed his third bucket from downtown in as many attempts, to tie the score 58-58 with just over a minute to play. Following a Logan Johnson free throw 20 seconds later that put the Chants back in front, 59-58, McEachin hit a layup with 15 seconds left to give the lead back to Radford, 60-59.

“We couldn't have pulled this out without Chris McEachin's aggressiveness and playmaking,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “Kenny's clutch three-pointer late in regulation was also a very courageous shot.”

With just 1.5 seconds left in regulation, Coastal's Joseph Harris made his second of two free throws to send the game into overtime.

Radford scored the first five points of the extra session and didn't allow the Chanticleers closer than a bucket the rest of the way.

“Coastal Carolina is a good team. They are extremely well coached and they threw a lot of junk defenses (triangle and two) at us. We never got into a good offensive rhythm and we missed a lot of tough shots, but executed well.”

After going just 1-for-6 from the field in the first half, McEachin hit six of his next 10 shots en route to his second 19-point showing in three outings. Parakhouski, this week's Big South Co-Player of the Week, finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Highlanders were Thomas and Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic), who contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“Art did a great job on the glass and Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) gutted out 45 minutes at the point.”

Parakhouski, who needed just 17 minutes of action in the first half to record his seventh double-double in conference play, capped off a 10-2 Highlander run with a 14-foot jumper in the lane to send his club into the break leading 32-25.

Prior to Radford's streak to close the opening period, Coastal Carolina answered a 12-3 Highlander spurt with a 10-2 flurry of its own to take a 23-22 advantage at the 6:20 mark.

Parakhouski, the nation's ninth leading rebounder coming into tonight's contest, led all players at the half with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

With both teams struggling offensively in the first 20 minutes, Radford made the most of 10 offensive rebounds turning them into 15 second-chance points.

After the Highlanders stretched their lead to double figures, 44-34 on a Thomas trey, Coastal Carolina (10-15, 4-9) outscored Radford 22-9 over the next 10 minutes to take a 56-53 advantage with 3:21 remaining.

Dexter Moore paced CCU with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting in 44 minutes of action. Harris recorded his league-leading 14th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Johnson also tallied 14 points for Coastal.

Both clubs finished with 14 offensive rebounds, but Radford held a 45-41 edge on the glass.

The Highlanders will begin their final road swing of the 2008-09 season Saturday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. contest at UNC Asheville.
