Regular Season Champs Begin 2009 Big South Tournament Tuesday Against High Point

RADFORD, Va. --
Top-seeded Radford will begin the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men's Basketball Tournament with a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday evening against High Point at the Dedmon Center.

HIGHLANDER HITS
- Winners of 14 of its last 16, top-seeded Radford enters the 2009 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men's Basketball Tournament 18-11 overall.
- Thanks to their fourth regular season crown in school history, the Highlanders will have home court throughout the conference tournament.
- Radford is attempting to win its second league tournament title since joining the Big South in 1985-86.
- The Highlanders' lone tournament championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament came 11 years ago (1997-98).
- Radford is the first team in league history to win the regular season after finishing seventh the previous campaign.
- To go along with recording the most wins since the 2000-01 club, Radford tied the league record for most conference victories in a season with 15.
- The Highlanders finished the league slate with nine road wins, which also set a new school and Big South standard. As of March 1, Radford's nine straight triumphs away from home is tied (UConn) for the longest streak in the nation.
- On Monday, junior Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) was named the 2008-09 Big South Player of the Year. Joining Parakhouski on the first team was Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), while head coach Brad Greenberg was voted Coach of the Year.
- Parakhouski joins Jason Williams (1999-2000) as the only players in Radford history to earn Player of the Year honors.
- Parakhouski is ninth nationally in rebounds per game and ranks among Big South leaders in the following categories: scoring (7th/16.0), rebounding (2nd/11.0), field-goal percentage (2nd/.547), free-throw percentage (10th/.674), blocked shots (6th/1.24), defensive rebounds (1st/7.3) and offensive rebounds (2nd/3.7). - Kenny Thomas (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) and Lynch-Flohr are also pouring in more than 10 points per outing with averages of 13.9 and 13.7, respectively.
- As a team, Radford finished the regular season ranked among the league's top three in the following categories: scoring offense (3rd/74.1), scoring margin (3rd/+4.0), field-goal percentage (1st/.463), field-goal percentage defense (1st/.397), three-point field goal percentage defense (1st/.321), rebounding margin (1st/+5.8), blocked shots (2nd/4.1) and defensive rebounds (1st/28.4).
- Radford is looking to win its first Big South tournament contest since defeating Charleston Southern 65-63 on March 4, 2003 in Charleston.
- Since going to the current postseason format, the Highlanders have hosted just one quarterfinal contest. Fifth-seeded High Point knocked off fourth-seeded Radford 87-84 on March 2, 2006 at the Dedmon Center.
- By virtue of winning the regular season, the Highlanders are guaranteed a postseason NIT berth.
