Friday's series opener is the first between Radford and Presbyterian in Big South play, and the first three-game set all-time between the programs. The only meeting in the series came on March 7, 2000, when the Highlanders took a 7-3 decision on the road from the Blue Hose, then a member of Division II.
Presbyterian is looking to stop a three-game slide, and win its first Big South game. In their second season as a Division I member, the Blue Hose have taken on a harsh non-conference schedule that has included 2008 NCAA Regional teams Georgia (No. 3, NCBWA), South Carolina and Charlotte, and No. 16 Clemson. Radford and Presbyterian share a common opponent in UAB, a team the Blue Hose swept in a rain-shortened series (Feb. 28).
Right fielder Jesse Harmon leads Presbyterian with his .375 average and seven stolen bases, while first baseman Kenny Bryant tops the power numbers with four home runs and 16 driven in.
Weekly notebook:
- Radford ended a three-game slide and closed out a long stretch of games in the New River Valley with its 7-4 win over James Madison Wednesday.
- A win over the Dukes gave the Highlanders their third win in a row against the 2008 CAA Champion, and fourth victory in the last five series games.
- The Highlanders haven't played on the road since March 3 at Tennessee.
- Wednesday's 2-for-3 day with two driven in by freshman shortstop
Jeff Kemp gave him his fourth multi-RBI game this season and eighth multi-hit game, tops on the team in both categories.
- Freshman lefty
Paul DeVito's 7 1/3 innings on Wednesday marked the longest outing by a Radford starting pitcher in 2009; DeVito (2-0) allowed two runs on seven hits while fanning three to earn his second win of the season, tops on the team.
- Freshman catcher
Carl Travers' sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to four games, the longest active for the Highlanders. Kemp's 10-game streak is the best in 2009.
- Senior third baseman
Nick Minter pushed his average over .400 (.409) with a 2-for-4 day against JMU.
- Senior left fielder
Mario Duarte continues his hot stretch into the weekend, hitting 12-of-27 (.444) at the plate with 11 RBI, second on the team.
Radford Probable Starting Pitchers
Friday – RHP
Aerik Taylor (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) – 1-2, 5.09 ERA
Taylor will make his second Big South start this weekend, and looks to rebound from an outing in the series opener against High Point last Friday where he surrendered five earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. The junior righty's 11 strikeouts and 17 2/3 innings of work lead the Highlanders in 2009.
Saturday – RHP
Shane Pysh (Wheeling, W.Va./John Marshall) – 0-1, 8.76
Pysh will go to the bump for the first time in 14 days when he makes his first career Big South start on Saturday. That initial call was expected to come last Saturday, before the High Point series was washed out. The sophomore righty is still in search of his first win of the season; his longest outing in 2009 is 4 1/3 innings.
Williams will continue his transition from the bullpen to the starting staff when he gets the ball on Sunday. The second-year right-hander is making his second start of the season, and first since March 9 against Bryant. Williams was scheduled to start the third game of the series against High Point.
