Ranked Virginia Drops Radford Baseball in Salem, 12-2

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – No. 10/21 Virginia opened up a 10-run lead through two innings and cruised to a 12-2 win over Radford in non-conference baseball at Salem Memorial Ballpark on Tuesday night.
The Cavaliers (23-4) plated nine in the second inning to open up the game against the Highlanders (10-11).
In the loss, Radford got a dominant pitching performance in relief from senior right-hander Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va./Herndon). Hammonds worked the middle seven innings after starting freshman lefty Paul DeVito (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was lifted in the second, tossing six shutout innings to hold down Virginia, a team the ranks in the top ten nationally in batting average and runs.
Midway through the game, Hammonds set down 12 of 13 straight Cavalier hitters. He finished the game fanning six hitters, and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Four Cavalier hitters had two hits apiece, led by second baseman Phil Gosselin's 2-for-3 evening, with three runs driven in. Center fielder Jarrett Parker was 2-for-4 with two driven in, scoring twice.
Freshman second baseman Jeff Kemp (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) went 2-for-4 to lead Radford. The Highlanders touched Virginia with runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Right-hander Robert Poutier (2-0) picked up the win for Virginia, tossing five scoreless frames and striking out six, allowing just three hits.
DeVito took the loss (3-1), working an inning and a third.
Radford is on the road for another mid-week affair Wednesday, traveling to Longwood for a 3 p.m. game.
